o Vivendi Universal's MP3.com Splits Into Technology, Content Units

San Diego -- MP3.com, a subsidiary of Vivendi Universal and provider of
music distribution technology and content, announced on Friday that the
company will be split in two, with a new company created called MP3.com
Technologies. In the new company, distribution technology developed by San
Diego-based MP3.com "will be expanded in scope to provide infrastructure
and applications throughout the entire network of Vivendi Universal online
properties." The company already said its technology would be used as part
of Vivendi Universal's Vizzavi wireless distribution service. MP3.com CEO
Robin Richards named Greg Kostello -- former executive vice president of
technology at the company -- as the new president of MP3.com Technologies.
As previously announced, Derrick Oien will serve as president of MP3.com
Web Operations. Vivendi Universal acquired MP3.com in August for $372
million.

manufacturing new products. Santa Clara-based Intel said it would continue

o Digital Watermarking Developer Digimarc Lays Off 20% of Staff

Portland, Ore. -- Digimarc, a developer of digital media content
watermarking technology, said that it has laid off 20 percent of its staff
as part of an effort to manage expenses. The company has also restructured
its operations "to place more emphasis on security applications and
licensing," said Digimarc CEO Bruce Davis. Oregon-based Digimarc develops
watermarks -- unseen and unheard data that is embedded along with audio
and video content, images and text -- that identify the content and can
include copyright information for security purposes. Last week, the
company filed patent infringement claims against SESAC, a performance
rights licensing organization, for its collaboration with rival
watermarking developer Verance Corp. -- which Digimarc is also suing for
patent infringement.
