o XM Satellite Radio Signs 11-Year,
$650 Million Deal With MLB
New York -- XM Satellite Radio, a provider of satellite-delivered
digital radio programming, announced on Wednesday that it has signed
an 11-year, $650 million agreement with Major League Baseball,
making it the official satellite network of MLB and giving it the
rights to broadcast games from every team during the 2005 season. In
addition to broadcasting games -- some of which will be available in
Spanish -- Washington-based XM said it will create a MLB radio
channel featuring original content and classic game broadcasts.
"This is the crown jewel -- the deal that we've been waiting for,"
said XM CEO Hugh Panero. "People of all ages are baseball fans, from
children to grandparents. Baseball is also a sport ideally suited
for radio, given its natural pace and the ability to vividly
describe each play." The company also believes the deal will
strengthen its partnerships with auto manufacturers. Rival Sirius
Satellite Radio recently announced a major deal of its own, with the
signing of a $500 million, 5-year deal to move shock jock Howard
Stern's popular radio show to its satellite platform. Sirius also
has an exclusive deal to broadcast all NFL football games.

o WWE Sues
Jakks Pacific, THQ for Bribery Over Wrestling Game License
Stamford, Conn. -- World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) has sued
toymaker Jakks Pacific, video game publisher THQ and others for
allegedly bribing a WWE licensing agent in order to acquire the
rights to make WWE wrestling video games. The suit alleges that the
licensing agent conspired with a former WWE senior vice president to
accept $100,000 in bribes from Jakks Pacific in order to hide
competing bids to make WWE games, from publishers including
Activision. Jakks Pacific and THQ were jointly awarded the license,
and have released several successful wrestling video games, such as
"WWE SmackDown." WWE is seeking treble, punitive and other damages,
and is asking the court to invalidate the Jakks/THQ license. In a
statement, THQ said it is not directly accused of wrongdoing in the
suit and was and is not aware of any alleged bribery by Jakks. The
company also "is committed to preserving its rights under the
videogame license with the WWE," and, "believes the WWE is pleased
with the manner in which THQ has managed their brand in the video
game category."

o AOL Europe
Drops Yahoo for Google on Targeted Ads
Paris -- Time Warner's AOL Europe announced on Wednesday that it
has dropped Yahoo-owned Overture as a provider of
advertiser-sponsored search results in Europe, electing instead to
go with Yahoo rival Google. AOL Europe currently has more than 6.3
million Internet access subscribers in Germany, France and the U.K.
alone. Until now, AOL Europe had been using Google's search
technology while at the same time using Overture for targeted
advertising search results. "With this new agreement, AOL's European
operations will benefit from the revenue opportunity, while its
users will enjoy an enhanced online experience through the addition
of relevant commercial information," said Google senior vice
president Omid Kordestani. Financial terms of the deal, which will
run for at least one year, have not been disclosed.

o TV Set-Top
Box Market Expanding for Satellite, IPTV Services
Los Angeles -- Two recent reports on the market for set-top boxes
needed to receive pay-TV services indicate that 71 million digital
satellite TV set-top boxes will be sold worldwide in 2008, while the
market for IP set-tops -- used to receive TV signals over a
broadband Internet connection -- will grow at least four times
faster than that for cable or satellite set-tops over the next five
years. Arizona-based In-Stat/MDR credits the increase in satellite
set-tops to increasing boxes per household in North America, the
swapping out of boxes due to conditional access changes in Europe,
new service launches in India, and the continued demand and price
declines for digital free-to-air (FTA) satellite receivers.
Furthermore, In-Stat predicts that shipments of FTA set-tops will
overtake those of pay-TV set-tops in 2004. While satellite and cable
TV set-tops shipments grow at a compound annual growth rate of 14%
over the next five years, New York-based ABI Research projects that
IP set-tops, which may be deployed by any DSL provider wishing to
offer pay-TV services, will grow at a 60% rate in the same period.
Set-top makers including Thomson, Samsung and Pace are already
committed to this market, but ABI notes that industry giants
Motorola and Scientific Atlanta have not yet released an IP set-top.
"The reasons for this are unclear," said ABI research director Vamsi
Sistla, "but may relate to the limited revenue opportunities this
market represents, compared to other parts of their business. On the
other hand, cable industry alliances may prevent them from moving in
this direction."

o U.K. Game
Developer Lionhead Studios Raises VC Funding
Guilford, England -- U.K.-based video game developer Lionhead
Studios announced that it has raised several million dollars in new
financing from Ingenious Ventures, IDG VE and Add Partners,
GamesIndustry.biz reported. The company just released its
Xbox-exclusive title "Fable," which has sold over 1.2 million copies
in its first month of release. "Capital investment is necessary for
any development studio wanting to create triple A titles and
previously it has been the industry norm for this investment to come
from publishers," said Lionhead CEO Peter Molyneux. "However, we
were attracted to a different source of funding as we felt this
would give us more flexibility for future product discussions with
publishers." Lionhead will use the funds for future product
development.

o Comcast to
Launch 24-Hour Kids Cable TV Network, VOD Service
Philadelphia -- Comcast, the nation's largest cable TV provider,
announced on Wednesday plans to launch a 24-hour digital cable TV
channel for preschool-aged children and companion video-on-demand
service. The company has partnered with London-based HIT
Entertainment, PBS and Sesame Workshop to license programming for
the channel, including episodes of "Bob the Builder," "Barney" and
"Angelina Ballerina." The video-on-demand service is slated to
launch in early 2005 and offer over 50 hours of programming, while
the 24-hour cable network is expected to launch in the fall of 2005.
"This channel will be a resource for parents and caregivers, who
will be able to depend on it to always offer age-appropriate viewing
options that present positive, enriching messages," said Comcast CEO
Brian Roberts. "We're committed to launching this new channel in a
significant number of our markets, and we will work with other cable
and satellite companies to reach as many customers as possible."
