o Google Profit Doubles in First
Quarterly Review as Public Company
Mountain View, Calif. -- Google on Thursday reported a record
more than doubling of its profit during the third quarter of 2004,
in the search engine giant's first quarterly review published as a
public company following its IPO. Google earned $52 million, or 19
cents per share, compared with $20.4 million (8 cents per share)
during the third quarter of 2003. Without charges associated with a
patent dispute settlement with rival Yahoo, Google said it would
have earned 70 cents per share. The company reported revenue of
$805.9 million, up 105% from $394 million in revenue reported for Q3
2003. "We are very pleased with the results of this quarter. Record
revenues, robust margins and cash generation all illustrated strong
performance and execution over the last quarter," said Google CEO
Eric Schmidt. Google shares rose 6.3% on the Nasdaq on Thursday to
close at $149.38.

o CD Shipments
Up 10% in First Six Months of 2004
Washington -- The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA)
has announced that music shipments have risen 4% in the first half
of 2004, with CD shipments up 10%, but that this increase still does
not counter the sales slump of the past several years. "We are
rising out of a deep hole and still have a long way to go," said
RIAA CEO Mitch Bainwol. "Piracy, both online and on the street,
continues to hit the music community hard, and thousands have lost
their jobs because of it." The RIAA's report also noted that nearly
59 million digital song downloads have been sold in the first half
of 2004 from services like iTunes, Napster and OD2.

o Anticipated
"Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas" Video Game Leaked Online
New York -- Game publisher Take-Two Interactive's Rockstar Games
has announced that a version of its highly-anticipated "Grand Theft
Auto: San Andreas" title has been leaked onto the Internet, six days
before its scheduled release date in the U.S. The news comes days
after Bungie Studios announced that its equally-anticipated "Halo 2"
title had shown up in a pirated version on the Internet. The leaks
aren't expected to have a very detrimental effect on either game's
sales. In a statement, Rockstar Games said that, "Downloading,
possession and distribution of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas,
including making the game available on the Internet, is theft. We
take the theft of our intellectual property very seriously and we
are and will continue to diligently and aggressively pursue this
matter." The company added that the proper authorities are
investigating the theft. The successful "Grand Theft Auto" franchise
has shipped over 30 million units to date for Rockstar Games.

o RIAA:
Record Label-Sanctioned File-Sharing Services Coming Soon
Washington -- Wired News on Thursday reported on a recent panel
discussion held by the libertarian Cato Institute in Washington,
during which the Recording Industry Association of America's (RIAA)
Mitch Glazier said that record label-sanctioned secure peer-to-peer
services will launch in the next several months. "We are going to
see three or four of these in the very, very near future," said
Glazier, the RIAA's senior vice president of government relations
and legislative counsel. "P2P technology is great… It can be
harnessed for good or harnessed for bad." Glazier added that
companies including New York-based Wurld Media and a firm called
Snowpack are in negotiations with various labels to experiment with
peer-to-peer distribution.

o Texas
Instruments Developing Single Chip Digital TV for Cell Phones
Dallas -- Chipmaker Texas Instruments (TI) announced on Thursday
that it is developing what it says it the wireless industry's first
digital TV on a single chip for cell phones, which will bring live
digital TV broadcasts to cell phone users. The "Hollywood" digital
TV chip will support new open broadcast standards for the wireless
industry, including DVB-H -- developed for Europe and expected to
extend to America -- and ISDB-T, the Japanese specification. TI said
dedicated wireless networks supporting these standards -- instead of
standard cellular networks -- will offer resolution of 24-30 frames
per second, rather than current one-to-15 frames per second
streaming capability. The company is conducting field trials in the
U.S., Europe and Japan, and expects samples of the chip to be ready
in 2006. Manufacturers are then expected to launch products in
conjunction with the first mobile digital TV infrastructure mass
deployments in 2007.

> Help Us Support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society
Digital Media Wire has joined forces with a volunteer
committee organized by Rightsline's CEO Russ Reeeder to raise
funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (L&LS). Over
100,000 Americans, adults and children, are diagnosed each
year with leukemia or one of its related cancers (lymphoma,
Hodgkin's and myeloma), and more than 50,000 people in the
U.S. alone die every year from these illnesses. Please help us
support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's efforts. To make
your fully tax deductible donation, please visit:
