o Intel Cancels Plans to Release Digital TV Chip

Santa Clara, Calif. -- Chipmaker Intel has cancelled plans to develop a chip for large digital televisions, saying research and development costs outweighed potential profits from the technology. The chip was initially announced at the Consumer Electronic Show in January. "We looked at the investment required, the returns and the timetable to get to those returns, and we decided it's better for us to focus our resources in other areas," Intel spokesman Bill Calder told the Associated Press. Intel also recently cancelled plans to release a 4-gigahertz Pentium 4 chip that was scheduled to ship in early 2005.

o Campus Digital Entertainment Service Ruckus Launches With $9 Million

Herndon, Va. -- Ruckus Network, a provider of legal digital entertainment services on college campuses, on Friday announced the launch of its network, with $9 million in funding from Battery Ventures and Shelter Capital Partners. The company announced the first schools to sign on as customers for its service are Alfred State College, Bentley College and Northern Illinois University. The Ruckus Network offers licensed movies and music, as well as a blend of national, local and university content. The company said it has licensed tracks from Universal Music Group, Sony BMG, Warner and independent labels Sanctuary and IODA, and is in discussions with other labels and movie distributors. "The student demographic is the single largest consumer of digital media with unequalled access to broadband and computing power, said Ruckus CEO William Raduchel. "Yet surprisingly, they've had to resort to cumbersome and often illegal solutions to get their digital entertainment."

o "Google in a Box" Launched in U.K. and Continental Europe

Paris -- Google announced on Friday that it has begun to sell its Google Search Appliance (GSA), dubbed "Google in a Box," in the U.K. and Continental Europe. Google in a Box is an integrated hardware and software device that allows large organizations and companies to deliver Google-quality search results from their intranets and public-facing websites, the company said. Google said Morgan Stanley, the British Library and the United Nations are already using the device. "Compared to our Web search, the GSA remains a relatively small part of the business, but it has still sold faster than any other enterprise search vendor," said Dave Girouard, general manager of Goggle's enterprise unit.

Atlanta -- Intent MediaWorks, a provider of technology for the distribution of multimedia content over legal peer-to-peer (P2P) networks, has signed an agreement with New York-based AlmondNet that will allow Intent MediaWorks to use AlmondNet's behavioral targeting technology. The technology integration agreement will allow Intent to deliver targeted interactive ads, the companies said. Intent's technology offers recording artists and music companies the ability to distribute their digital content securely through major P2P systems, including Kazaa, Gnutella, and BitTorrent networks. "With our agreement with AlmondNet, we can offer our users relevant ads while downloading safe, free and legal music or video files," said Les Ottolenghi, CEO of Intent MediaWorks.

The company also announced the release of "WWE Survivor Series" for Nintendo Game Boy Advance, the latest product of its controversial pact with Jakks Pacific to create games based on the pro wrestling franchise. (San Francisco) Wired News on Friday tested a $40 self-installed replacement battery for Apple's iPod from Newer Technology. The iPod's battery is one feature that will need to be replaced at some point with regular use of the device over several years, as an initial battery life of eight to ten hours can dwindle to as little as two to three hours per charge over time. The Newer Technology battery, installed with tools from an included kit, ran a total of 22 hours per charge on the device tested by Wired News. (San Francisco) CNET News.com on Friday reported on "codec killers," or sounds and songs containing them that produce audible defects when compressed into formats such as MP3, WMA and AAC so that they may more easily be transmitted over the Internet. The process of removing bits of audio data from a song file for compression can have the unintended effect of creating such audible defects. Songs with instruments that make sharp sounds, such as castanets or wood blocks, are prone to audible artifacts, are as very pure sounds, songs recorded at very high volumes, and songs with powerful low-frequency bass tracks. Audio experts said tracks including The Beatles' "Revolution 9," Pearl Jam's "Daughter" and Hole's "Celebrity Skin" are examples of "codec killers" and will be rendered audibly different in a compressed format.
