o Publishing Software Giant Adobe Systems to Cut 260 Jobs

Palo Alto, Calif. -- Adobe Systems, a maker of publishing software, plans
to cut 260 jobs -- or about 9 percent of its total workforce -- throughout
the company, according to an internal memo. The company is planning to
notify affected employees on Friday. The move is part of a plan to realign
and reduce costs to support future business plans. "A significant part of
our ability to execute on these plans and realize our near-term growth
opportunities depends on having the right resources in place," said
president and CEO Bruce Chizen, in the memo. "There's no doubt the coming
year will continue to be challenging."

o Google Filtering Racist Sites from Its German, French Search Engines

San Francisco -- Search engine provider Google has removed over 100
controversial sites from search results garnered from the French and
German versions of its site, according to a report published by Harvard
University's Berkman Center for Internet and Society. Many of the sites
are Neo-Nazi or white supremacist in nature, and therefore illegal in
France and Germany; the sites still appear in search results on the
U.S.-based Google.com site. "To avoid legal liability, we remove sites
from Google.de search results pages that may conflict with German law,"
Google spokesman Nate Tyler told CNET News.com. The sites were removed
after specific requests from each country's government. Mountain View,
Calif.-based Google has also suppressed sites at the behest of the Church
of Scientology, and recently had its search engine banned in the country
of China.

o GartnerG2: Labels Should Mandate Warning Stickers on Copy-Protected CDs

San Jose, Calif. -- Copy-protected CDs, increasingly being released by the
recording industry to combat music piracy, should bear mandatory labels
warning that the discs may not function in all devices that play music
CDs, said San Jose, Calif.-based research firm GartnerG2. The technology
is being placed on CDs to prevent songs on them from being "ripped" onto a
PC and shared on file-sharing networks or copied to a blank CD, but can
also prevent the music tracks from being read by some CD-capable devices.
"Until technology standards are tweaked and universally implemented,
mandatory labeling must be required," said GartnerG2 research director
P.J. McNealy. "Consumers will balk if they bring home a CD and find it
won't play on every CD player they own." A July 2002 GartnerG2 survey of
1,005 U.S. adults and 1,009 U.S. teens found that 82 percent of
respondents said they think it is legal to make copies of CDs for personal
backup purposes; 77 percent think they should be able to copy the CD for
personal use in another device, and 60 percent said they should be able to
give another member of the household a copy. "Since it's clear consumers
perceive they have the right to make some copies, the lack of labeling
will only contribute to declining revenue for the music industry as those
who are still buying CDs become frustrated," McNealy added.

(San Francisco) Wired News reported on Friday on the demise of the
Einstein Academy, a pioneer online grade school where students were given
a free PC and Internet access, and were taught all lessons online. The
Morrisville, Pennsylvania school board this week voted to revoke the
school's charter, amidst "allegations of financial irregularities,
mismanagement and numerous violations of state education guidelines." "We
felt that the problems with the school were so great that the education of
these students was imperiled," Morrisville school board president Ken
Junkins told Wired News. "There was more danger to these children from
attending the school than not attending."
