o Hacker
"DVD Jon" Claims Crack of Apple iTunes Security Code
San Francisco - A hacker who was nicknamed "DVD Jon" for
his cracking of the encryption on DVDs as a teenager, has now
claimed to have cracked Apple's copy-protection technology that
prevents iPods from playing songs purchased from stores other than
iTunes, according to published reports. Norway native Jon Lech
Johansen, 22, said his Redwood Shores, Calif.-based firm DoubleTwist
Ventures will license the code that cracks Apple's FairPlay security
to third parties. "What he did was basically reverse-engineer
FairPlay," DoubleTwist managing director Monique Farantzos told
Reuters. "This allows other companies to offer content for the iPod."
Apple, which has in the past updated iTunes to block other
applications that enabled unauthorized sharing over a wireless
network, for instance, declined to comment for Reuters. "There's a
certain amount of trouble that Apple can give us, but not enough to
stop this," Farantzos told the Associated Press. "We believe we're
on good legal ground, and our attorneys have given us the green
light on this." Currently, Apple's iTunes accounts for 88% of all
legal song downloads, while the iPod represents over 60% of the
music player market.

o NFL Drops
CBS SportsLine as Producer of NFL.com
Miami - The National Football League (NFL) has opted to
take over the production of its NFL.com website from CBS SportsLine,
ending a six-year relationship, the Miami Herald reported. ''It was
a great run with SportsLine, but we felt it was time to look long
term," NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy told the Herald. The decision
not to renew Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.-based SportsLine's contract was
made at a league owners' meeting in New Orleans on Monday. "It's not
in CBS SportsLine's interest to be building up someone else's brand
for the long term, which is basically what we were doing for NFL.com,"
CBS SportsLine spokesman Alex Riethmiller told the Herald. "We're at
a point now where we're looking to invest resources in our own
brand." CBS SportsLine will likely lose some revenue as a result of
the decision; the company also produces the websites of the PGA and
NCAA.

o Online
Game Retailer Lik-Sang Closes Following Sony Court Victories
Hong Kong - Hong Kong-based online game retailer Lik-Sang
has announced plans to shut down, following its defeat in several
U.K. lawsuits filed by Sony that targeted the company's sale of
imported Japanese PSP handheld game devices to customers in Europe.
"Blame it on Sony," Pascal Clarysse, former marketing manager for
Lik-Sang, said in a statement. "That's the latest dark spot in their
shameful track record as gaming industry leader. The 'empire'
finally won. A few dominating retailers from the U.K. probably will
rejoice (in) the news, but everybody else in the gaming world lost
something today." Sony disputed Lik-Sang's characterization of the
events. "Lik-Sang did not contest this case (i.e. they did not turn
up and therefore incurred no legal costs)," the company told
GamesIndustry.biz. "We have been awarded substantial costs against
Lik-Sang which have not been paid. We would therefore strongly deny
that our actions have had anything to do with this website closing
(we assume the legal entity is still trading), and would suggest
that this release is sour grapes on behalf of Lik-Sang." Sony added
that it will take action against any other retailers involved in the
"gray importing" of its products between territories.

Technology Firms, Consumer Advocates Launch "Digital Freedom"
Campaign
Washington - A group of technology firms, consumer
advocacy groups and artists on Wednesday announced the launch of the
Digital Freedom campaign, "a national effort to fight back against
efforts by the big record labels and movie studios to ban new
digital technologies." The Consumer Electronics Association, Public
Knowledge, Electronic Frontier Foundation, Media Access Project,
Computer and Communications Industry Association (CCIA) and New
America Foundation are among groups supporting the campaign. The
group said it seeks to "educate policy makers, innovators, parents,
students and other consumers about the lawsuits and legislation that
threaten to revoke individuals' rights to use digital technology."
"For the past few years, content companies have launched a sustained
assault on the freedom of consumers to legally enjoy, create and
distribute music and video, and on the freedom of manufacturers to
innovate in response to consumer demands," said Gigi Sohn, president
of Public Knowledge. "Those powerful companies have worked nonstop
through the Federal Communications Commission and Congress to
achieve their ends. The Digital Freedom campaign is a signal that
it's time the government paid attention to consumers, and to the
laws already on the books."

o Report:
News Corp. Among Suitors for Digg News Aggregation Site
San Francisco - Digg, a site that posts news stories whose
prominence is determined by votes from a community of users, has
recently been in acquisition talks with companies including Rupert
Murdoch's News Corporation, according to TechCrunch.com. Citing
"multiple sources close to the negotiations," the site reported that
Digg has been unable to secure the $150 million-plus price it was
seeking, and will likely look to a second round of venture capital
financing in lieu of a buyout. News Corp.'s Fox Interactive Media
unit has made a string of acquisitions since its formation in 2005,
including the MySpace online social network, video games site
IGN.com and movie reviews site RottenTomatoes.com.

o Report: 1
in 10 Online Consumers Watch TV Shows Online
New York - One in ten online consumers now watches TV
shows online, according to the latest Consumer Internet Barometer, a
report created by The Conference Board and TNS. Personal convenience

traditional TV viewing habits. More than 62% of online TV viewers

programming. Very few consumers asked were willing to pay per
download or enroll in subscription services to access online TV; 53%
preferred streaming, while 49% sought free downloads. "This is
