o Apple Releases Photo iPod, Launches European iTunes Store

Cupertino, Calif. -- Apple on Tuesday introduced the iPod Photo, a new version of its digital music player that features a high-resolution color-screen and allows users to upload and view up to 25,000 digital pictures. A 40GB version of the device, which can also display photos on a TV, will sell for $499, while a 60GB model will cost $599. Apple also introduced the U2 iPod, a $349 black and red 20GB iPod featuring the band's engraved autographs on the back. The company also launched a European Union version of its iTunes Music Store, which will sell digital music downloads to residents of Austria, Belgium, Finland, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal and Spain. The company already operates iTunes Stores in the U.K., France and Germany. The European store will offer tracks in each country for 0.99 euro ($1.26), and offer the same personal use rights as the U.S. and U.K. stores. Finally, Apple announced that it plans to launch a version of its iTunes Store in Canada next month.

o XM, Delphi Release $349 Handheld Satellite Radio Receiver

New York -- XM Satellite Radio, a provider of satellite-delivered digital radio programming, on Tuesday announced with manufacturing partner Delphi the release of the first handheld portable satellite radio, the Delphi MyFi. The $349 radio, which weighs 7.3 ounces and is about the size of an iPod, and features a "memory" mode that allows owners to record five hours of radio programming on the device for listening at a later time. Washington-based XM said that singer Elton John will be featured in its national TV ad campaign for the new radio. The Delphi MyFi will be available at retailers including Best Buy and Circuit City beginning in early December.

o U.K. Game Developer Argonaut Games Goes Up for Sale, CEO Resigns

London -- U.K.-based video game publisher Argonaut Games, which developed titles based on "Harry Potter" for Electronic Arts and last week laid off about 100 employees and shut its studio in Sheffield, has announced that it is now seeking a buyer for the company. Argonaut also said that CEO Jeremy San and board member Aaron San have both resigned. The company's three subsidiaries -- Argonaut Software Limited, Just Add Monsters Limited and Morpheme Limited -- were placed on sale by administrators on Friday. "Administrators are confident that an early sale can be finalized. An early sale is always desirable in this sector to minimize any disruption to ongoing games development, to the staff and to the customers," David Rubin & Partners said in a statement. Fellow U.K. game developer Eidos, known for its "Tomb Raider" franchise, has also put itself up for sale in recent weeks.

o Sirius Signs Lance Armstrong, Expands Retail and Automaker Distribution

New York -- Sirius Satellite Radio announced on Tuesday that it has signed cyclist Lance Armstrong to host his own radio show that will launch later this year. The company also made several announcements regarding new products and distribution channels, including news that its radio receivers will be sold at 900 Office Depot retail locations in the U.S. Sirius said that car makers Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Volvo have each expanded the availability of Sirius on their vehicles. Mercedes will offer Sirius as a dealer-installed option on its SLK Roadster, while BMW will make Sirius a factory-installed option on all of its 2006 sedans, and Volvo will offer Sirius as a dealer-installed option on four of its cars. Finally, Sirius said it released the first interior glass mounted satellite radio antenna for automobiles. The SIGMA antenna was developed in partnership with Michigan-based RecepTec.

o Billboard to Launch Weekly Ringtone Sales Chart

New York -- Billboard magazine announced on Tuesday that it will launch a weekly cell phone ringtone sales chart, beginning in its Nov. 6 issue. The "Hot Ringtones" chart will feature the top 20 polyphonic ringtone sales for each week, aggregated from major ringtone distributors and wireless carriers representing more than 90% of U.S. market share. Firms providing data for the weekly sales chart include 9Squared, AG Interactive, Dwango Wireless, Faith West, Infospace Mobile, Kanematsu, Zingy and Ztango.

o Online Bookseller Abebooks Acquires Spanish Bookseller IberoLibro.com

Victoria, B.C. -- Online bookseller Abebooks.com announced on Tuesday that it has acquired Spanish-language antiquarian bookseller Iberlibro.com, adding two million new titles to its 60 million book inventory. The announcement comes a week after Abebooks.com's signing of a partnership with Spain-based book store chain Casa del Libro, which added 250,000 titles to its online marketplace. Canada-based Abebooks said its Spanish-language book inventory has grown 400% since February to nearly 3 million titles.

(West Chester, Pa.) Video game retailer Electronics Boutique announced on Tuesday that it has partnered with WideRay to install mobile game download portals in select EB Games retail stores. The Wireless Game Portals, which will launch in 100 stores in December, will allow owners of compatible devices to view a listing of game titles available for purchase, demo the titles and purchase them from their cell phones. The wireless service, which will transmit games and data over a Bluetooth connection using WideRay's Jack Service Point, will also let customers view game-related video, and reviews and previews of PC and console games.

(New York) Quigo Technologies, a developer of "contextual" online advertising, announced that USAToday.com, NYPost.com and several other publishers have signed on to use its AdSonar Exchange system. New York-based Quigo's technology sorts through the text on news and other websites, and places ads within the actual texts of stories that appear as hyperlinks leading to advertisers' sites.

CD Baby, an online retailer that sells CDs from independent artists, announced that it has now paid out over $10 million directly to musicians resulting from the worldwide sale of their CDs. (Paris) European broadband Internet access provider Wanadoo announced on Tuesday that it has extended its contract with OD2, a unit of Seattle-based Loudeye, to provide digital music services for Wanadoo in Europe. (Hollywood) Royal Philips Electronics on Tuesday announced the launch of RepliTrack, a video watermarking technology designed to protect against piracy by providing a forensic tracking system for DVD discs. The software allows DVD creators to embed a unique watermark onto a DVD that still carries the mark on copies of the DVD, transfers to VHS tape, and file formats traded on file-sharing networks. Philips said its watermarking technology supports all of DVD duplication equipment manufacturer Rimage's systems.

(Chicago) Video game developer Midway Games announced on Tuesday that it plans to expand its successful "Mortal Kombat" fighting game franchise into the action/adventure genre, with the release of "Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks" for PlayStation 2 and Xbox in the fall of 2005. The Chicago-based company's Mortal Kombat franchise has sold over 22 million games to date worldwide, including the recently released "Mortal Kombat: Deception," which has become Midway's fastest-selling game ever.

(Burbank, Calif.) Electronic Arts announced on Tuesday that it has secured the rights from Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and DC Comics to develop titles based on the upcoming "Batman Begins" film starring Christian Bale. (Edmonton, Ontario) Video game developer BioWare Corp. on Tuesday launched its own online store, from which the company will sell premium content for its 2 million unit-selling "Neverwinter Nights" massively multiplayer online roleplaying game. The store, which opens on Nov. 10, will offer "modules" produced by BioWare and Atari with feedback from game players. "Fans want to see more official content for Neverwinter Nights, and we are delivering just that. We'll offer great new modules from BioWare designers, as well as prominent fan community figures, with all of the content produced and approved by BioWare," said CEO Dr. Greg Zeschuk.

(New York) Mobile game publisher Digital Bridges has announced several new wireless games, including titles based on the films "Robocop," "Platoon" and "2 Fast 2 Furious." (London) The BBC Online reports that British Telecom (BT) is in talks with a digital music content provider to offer digital music downloads to portable players from its 70,000 pay phones in the U.K., beginning as early as next year. The service, which would bill songs to a credit card or BT charge card, would initially be offered through a network of 1,200 BT information kiosks, which already offer Internet access. "The payphone business needs to diversify and offer new services if it is going to survive," BT spokesman Les King told BBC News Online.
