Private Equity Firms in Talks to Acquire Radio Giant Clear Channel
San Antonio, Texas - Clear Channel Communications, which
owns 1,200 radio stations, 40 TV stations and an outdoor advertising
business, has retained Goldman Sachs to consider strategic
alternatives, which analysts say include a possible sale to take the
company private. The New York Times reported that private equity
groups Providence Equity Partners, Blackstone and KKR are currently
in talks to acquire Clear Channel for more than $18.5 billion,
citing "people involved in the talks." San Antonio, Texas-based
Clear Channel has a market capitalization of about $16 billion.

Napster Copyright Case Says Hummer Winblad Destroyed E-mails
San Francisco - A federal judge has ruled that Silicon
Valley venture capital firm Hummer Winblad exhibited "gross
negligence" when it directed employees to destroy e-mails related to
its dealings with Napster in 2000, the Los Angeles Times reported.
U.S. District Court Judge Marilyn Hall Patel will tell jurors the
deleted e-mails would have hurt the company's defense, if the
copyright case brought by record labels and music publishers against
Hummer Winblad and Bertelsmann -- two early Napster investors --
ever goes to trial. "As we have all been required to surrender our
Napster e-mails, this should reinforce compliance with our
long-standing policies," Ann Winblad wrote to employees, according
to court documents. "We do not retain e-mails, it is your
responsibility to delete your handled e-mails immediately."

o Report:
Jack Welch and Jack Connors Exploring Acquisition of Boston Globe
Boston - The Boston Globe reports that Jack Welch, the
former CEO of GE, and former advertising executive Jack Connors are
part of a group that is considering making a bid for The Boston
Globe, which is owned by The New York Times Company. The article
said that the executives are working with JPMorgan Chase on
analyzing a possible deal, which could value the newspaper at $550 -
$600 million. The New York Times bought The Boston Globe in 1993 for
$1.1 billion. "Welch, who grew up in Salem and moved to Boston in
his retirement, and Connors, co-founder of the Boston advertising
firm Hill Holliday, are looking to assemble a small group of local
business people for a bid that would include debt and equity, the
executives involved in the effort say," the article said. "Each man
has tentatively committed $25 million to the deal, the executives
say."
