o Qualcomm Spending $800 Million to Develop Wireless Multimedia Network

San Diego -- Wireless technology developer Qualcomm on Monday announced plans to deploy a nationwide "mediacast" network that it says will deliver high-quality video and audio to 3G cell phones "at mass market prices." San Diego-based Qualcomm's MediaFLO subsidiary will spend $800 million over the next five years to develop the new network, which will partner with cellular operators using Qualcomm's CDMA technology to deliver multimedia to cell phones in the 700MHz spectrum. The network, expected to begin commercial operation in 2006, will support 50-100 national and local content channels, including up to 15 live streaming channels of video at up to 30 frames per second. Qualcomm said the MediaFLO network will give content providers including TV stations and networks, cable TV and satellite operators a major new distribution channel that complements their current offerings.

o Online Ad Firm DoubleClick Considers Sale of Company

New York -- Online advertising firm DoubleClick announced that it has hired financial advisors to explore strategic alternatives, including a possible sale of the company. New York-based DoubleClick is one of few online ad firms to be declining in contrast with growing revenue at rivals such as Google and Yahoo's Overture. The company said it hired Lazard Freres & Co. to explore alternatives, including a sale of all or part of the company, recapitalization, extraordinary dividend, share repurchase or a spin-off. Founded in 1995, DoubleClick shares traded as high as $100 in 2000 but lately have traded for around $7.

o Federal Court Cracks Down on Counterfeit Nintendo Game Systems

Redmond, Wash. -- Nintendo of America announced on Monday that the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington has issued a temporary restraining order against the import and sale of video game systems containing counterfeit versions of Nintendo games, which were being sold at numerous shopping malls. The counterfeit games, which resemble a Nintendo 64 console controller and plug directly into a TV, contain embedded Nintendo titles like "Donkey Kong" and "Mario Bros." and have been sold under brand names including "Power Player," "Super Joystick," "Superjoy" and "Powerjoy" at Washington-area shopping mall kiosks. Nintendo said it acted after receiving tips from 400 of its "loyal fans," and is now working with law enforcement to address reports of the devices being sold in 40 states. "We're confident that mall management companies around the nation will provide their complete cooperation upon being informed of the court's decision," said Jodi Daugherty, director of anti-piracy for Nintendo of America. The company added that U.S. Customs has already seized tens of thousands of the devices upon entry into the country.

o Report: Digital Video Recorders to Reach 20% of European Homes by 2008

London -- Twenty percent of Western European homes will have digital video recorder (DVR) services like TiVo by 2008, offering a cost-effective alternative to true video-on-demand, according to a report from Boston-based market research firm Yankee Group. The firm noted that high subscription fees initially might deter users from existing services like Sky+ and Pilotime, which themselves will be aided by set-top box price cuts. "DVR services will be more widely and frequently used by digital TV subscribers than regular video-on-demand offerings that are limited to the less ubiquitous cable and broadband platforms," said Yankee Group senior analyst Jonathan Doran. In a separate report released on Monday, Yankee Group predicted that annual video-on-demand and near video-on-demand revenue in Western Europe will increase fivefold by 2008, to $2.8 billion. "Both video-on-demand and DVR will coexist as complementary options for digital TV customers," said Yankee Group's Doran. "Given the fact that substantial demand for true video-on-demand remains unproven, many cable operators will also keep their options open by not committing to a single on-demand strategy, offering customers a choice of video-on-demand, DVR or both."
