TV, Radio Delivery Firm MobiTV Raises $100 Million
Emeryville, Calif. - MobiTV, a developer of mobile TV and
radio delivery technologies, announced on Thursday that it has
raised over $100 million in its third round of venture capital
financing. New investors Adobe Systems and Hearst Corporation led
the investment round, which generated an extra $30 million before
closing. Oak Investment Partners, Menlo Ventures, Redpoint Ventures
and Gefinor Ventures also participated. Emeryville, Calif.-based
MobiTV's technology powers mobile TV and radio services offered by
AT&T, Sprint, Cingular and Alltel in the U.S.; Bell, Rogers and
Telus Mobility in Canada; 3UK and Orange in the U.K.; and other
carriers in Latin American and other regions. The company said it
has been investing heavily in networking and media delivery
technology and infrastructure, and is committed to further
developing open standards and protocols. MobiTV, which claims more
than one million paying subscribers for its services, said it will
use the funds for continued growth.

o Consumer
Advocates Ask FTC to Probe Online Ad Targeting
Washington - Two consumer advocacy groups have asked the
Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to investigate possible privacy
violations by online advertisers, who are using increasingly
sophisticated means of profiling and tracking consumers. In their
50-page filing, the Center for Digital Democracy and U.S. Public
Interest Research Group state that "the data collection and
interactive marketing system that is shaping the entire U.S.
electronic marketplace is being built to aggressively track Internet
users wherever they go, creating data profiles used in ever-more
sophisticated and personalized 'one-to-one' targeting schemes." The
groups specifically single out Microsoft's new adCenter services,
and use of data gleaned from its Hotmail service to sharpen its
ad-targeting efforts. "Microsoft, like Google and Yahoo, is actively
rewriting the rules that govern the online marketplace," said Center
for Digital Democracy executive director Jeff Chester. "It is the
FTC's job to make certain that these rules reflect more than
corporate self-interest. The public interest matters, too, and it is
the FTC's responsibility to protect and promote that vital
perspective, by issuing injunctions against the most egregious of
the new invasive advertising practices, which are fully described in
our complaint."

o Cingular
Launches Mobile Music Subscription Service
Atlanta - Wireless network operator Cingular on Thursday
launched Cingular Music, a new mobile music service that will
include subscription-based offerings from Napster, XM Satellite
Radio, Yahoo Music and eMusic. The service, which was first reported
in the Wall Street Journal yesterday, will allow users to transfer
WMA tracks from Napster ($14.95 per month) and Yahoo Music
($11.99+), as well as unprotected MP3s from eMusic ($9.99+), to
their phones from their PCs via a USB connection. Cingular also
partnered with XM Satellite Radio, and will make 25 XM channels
available for streaming to Cingular phones for $8.99 per month. The
XM service will include data that identifies song title, artist and
album. Cingular also on Thursday debuted the Cingular SYNC phone
from Samsung, which features an MP3 player and one-touch music key
that connects with Cingular Music. The phone features a microSD
memory card slot, and will be available for $49 with a two-year
contract and $100 rebate. Cingular Music's partnerships with
existing subscription-based services differentiate the offering from
competitors such as Sprint, which mainly sells over-the-air
downloads directly to mobile phones.

Kazaa Pays $10 Million to Settle Music Publishers' Lawsuit
New York - The operators of the Kazaa file-sharing network
have agreed to pay $10 million to music publishers to settle a

announcement yesterday that a "substantial sum" would be paid by
Kazaa to settle the 2001 lawsuit. In July, Kazaa agreed to pay at
least $115 million to settle similar copyright suits with record
labels, and alter its service to filter copyrighted works.

Electronic Arts to Launch Retooled Online Game Distribution Service
San Jose, Calif. - Video game publisher Electronic Arts
has redesigned its online game download service, the Associated
Press reported. The old EA Downloader service will be replaced by EA

their release on disc in retail stores. The service will allow users
to link their PayPal accounts for direct payments to Electronic
Arts. In addition to full games, EA Link also features downloadable
game demos, trailers and wallpapers. EA Online vice president Chip

beyond a static model of 'I've bought the game and I'm done.' This

Mountain View, Calif. - Google on Thursday launched a
version of its Gmail e-mail service for mobile phones. Gmail for

new software allows users to launch Gmail on their phones more
quickly -- up to five times faster, according to Google -- without
first having to open a mobile Web browser and navigate to a specific
site. It also reduces the number of clicks and scrolling required to
read, compose or search mail, and automatically resizes photos and

o Capcom,
Hyde Park Teaming on "Street Fighter" Movie Sequel
New York - Japanese video game publisher Capcom has
announced plans to produce a second feature-length film based on its
"Street Fighter" game franchise, GameDaily.com reported. The
company's 1994 "Street Fighter" film, which was panned by critics,
cost $33 million to make and went on to earn a total of nearly $100
million. Capcom's "Resident Evil" game franchise has also spawned
two more successful movie spin-offs, with a third slate for release
in September 2007. The new "Street Fighter" movie -- will centered
on the female game character Chung Li -- will be a joint venture
with Hyde Park Entertainment that Capcom will help to create,
produce and fund. "We don't want to hand over the IPs to an
independent producer or production company," Capcom head of
marketing Charles Bellfield told GameDaily.com. "This is all about
keeping the Street Fighter franchise true and authentic to the core
consumer, but leveraging the understanding that this is a different
medium and we do need other partners on board to deliver to this
medium."
