o Microsoft to Use IBM Chips in Future Xbox Products

Redmond, Wash. -- Microsoft announced on Monday that it has licensed semiconductor technology from IBM and will use IBM chips in future products for its Xbox video game console. "By combining our vision, software experience and R&D resources with IBM's computer and semiconductor technologies, we plan to deliver unprecedented and unparalleled entertainment experiences to consumers while creating new engines of growth for the technology and entertainment industries," said Robbie Bach, senior vice president of the Home & Entertainment Division at Microsoft. The company recently announced it would switch the supplier of graphics chips for the Xbox from Nvidia to rival ATI. Microsoft currently uses an Intel processor to power the video game console; the company did not say whether it would replace the Intel chip with one from IBM.

Santa Clara, Calif. -- Chipmaker Intel on Monday announced the release of its Pentium 4 processor, which the company says is geared for high-end gamers. Intel said the new chip sports faster frame rates and higher-level detail rendering to enhance PC gaming. "Designed with the gaming and enthusiast communities in mind, the new Intel Pentium 4 processor Extreme Edition supporting HT Technology unleashes the performance needed to conquer the most demanding games and applications," said Bill Siu, vice president and general manager of Intel's desktop platforms group. "We have added an on-die two-megabyte Level 3 cache, which delivers a more realistic gaming experience when combined with Intel HT Technology."

o MIT Halts Campus Cable TV Music Service Over Copyright Concerns

Cambridge, Mass. -- An online music service that used MIT's campus-wide analog cable TV network to deliver songs to students' TVs and stereos has been temporarily taken offline, following objections over licensing from providers including Universal Music Group. The Library Access to Music Project (LAMP) launched last week, having obtained streaming versions of 3,500 CDs from Loudeye Technologies, which the school assumed had obtained the necessary licenses. The school also holds public performing licenses from ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC. The LAMP website states the service "was designed to operate in full compliance with the law and to respect the rights of all copyright holders," and that, "Loudeye assured us on multiple occasions that the content they provided to us was prepared fully under authorization from the record labels and on behalf of the publishers." MIT was notified by Loudeye after LAMP's launch that it may have been mistaken, and the school has since received a request from major label Universal to remove its songs from the service. "We are therefore temporarily suspending the LAMP service while we pursue clarifying discussions with Loudeye, the record labels, and music publishers," reads a note on the LAMP website.

o Interactive TV Firm OpenTV Sells E-Learning Unit to Harcourt

San Francisco -- OpenTV, a provider of interactive TV software and services, announced on Monday that it has sold the assets of its online education business, eSchool Online, to Classroom Connect, a unit of educational publisher Harcourt. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed. The eSchool Online unit, which provides large urban school districts, state education departments and major educational publishers with multimedia professional development content and K-12 curriculum courseware, is part of ACTV, which OpenTV purchased in Sept. 2002 for $92.3 million. "The eSchool Online sale continues our ongoing efforts to focus on our core business," said OpenTV CEO James Ackerman. "This is another positive step for improving our overall business, and helps us reduce the burn rate at ACTV as we said we would do when we acquired the business."
