o Movie Studios Plan Copyright Suits
Against Internet Movie-Swappers
Los Angeles -- The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA)
announced on Thursday that it will follow in the steps of the
recording industry and begin filing copyright infringement lawsuits
against individuals suspected of sharing movies on peer-to-peer
file-sharing networks. Although paling in comparison to the amount
of music traded online, the MPAA said an average of between 115,000
and 148,000 movie titles are traded daily in the U.S. on
peer-to-peer services. While on average a movie takes between 12-18
hours to download on Kazaa, the MPAA says newer services provide
downloads in 3 to 6 hours and emerging technology could lower the
wait to just 6 seconds. "People who have been stealing our movies
believe they are anonymous on the Internet, and wouldn't be held
responsible for their actions," said MPAA president and CEO Dan
Glickman. "They are wrong. We know who they are, and we will go
after them, as these suits will prove." MPAA member studios plan to
file against as many as 230 defendants in their first wave of
movie-swapper lawsuits on Nov. 15, seeking damages of between
$30,000 and $150,000 for each alleged illegal movie offered online.
"The movie industry has contributed immeasurably to California's
economic strength," said Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. "It has also
helped many of my own dreams come true. We cannot let illegal movie
piracy continue or it will cripple this important industry and
seriously hurt California's economy."

o Microsoft
Expands Music Download Service in Europe
Madrid -- Microsoft announced on Thursday that it has launched
its MSN music download service in eight European countries, bringing
its Western European tally to 13. Microsoft said it launched its new
stores in Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland through a partnership
with CDON.com, a Sweden-based Internet retailer. The U.S.-based
software giant also said it would launch the service in Spain, the
Netherlands, Austria and Switzerland using a similar partnership
agreement with OD2, a unit of Seattle-based Loudeye. "If you take
all the new countries, we expect to overtake iTunes very soon
because we will have a larger user base to tap," said Arndt
Salzburg, Microsoft MSN director for the EMEA region (Europe, Middle
East and South America). Just last week, rival Apple expanded its
iTunes music download service to an additional nine countries,
bringing its European total to 12.

o Microsoft,
Intel Joint Marketing Campaign to Tout "Digital Home" Technologies
Redmond, Wash. -- Microsoft and chipmaker Intel announced on
Thursday that they have partnered on a joint marketing campaign
highlighting how their technologies figure into a "digital home."
The "Digital Joy" TV, print, cinema and online ad campaign will
point consumers to set-ups showcasing interconnected consumer
electronics devices in 38 high-traffic U.S. shopping malls. The
displays will allow consumers to try out new devices that utilize
Intel chips and Microsoft's Media Center software that can connect
PCs with various devices and appliances, and share video, music and
photos. "Consumers have been anticipating the benefits of 'digital
convergence' in the home -- integration of digital movies, music,
photos and TV along with devices -- powered by the PC," said
Microsoft's Tom Button. "Microsoft and Intel share a common vision
on how to deliver these benefits to consumers."

Telematics Acquires Integra, Plans Smartphone "Bizmondo"
London -- Tiger Telematics, the Florida-based electronics firm
behind the Gizmondo multifunctional handheld video game console,
announced on Thursday that it has acquired U.K.-based Integra, a
developer of business integration software, and will include its

Auto: San Andreas" title earned a record $1.6 million in consumer
rental revenue for the week ending Oct. 31, also remarkably

(Santa Monica, Calif.) Citing "Internet piracy and bootlegging"
as the cause, Interscope Records announced on Thursday that it has
moved up the release date for rapper Eminem's new album "Encore" by
four days to Nov. 12. "This is something we have been anticipating,"
said Interscope head of sales and marketing Steve Berman. "Once we
had all of our pieces together we started a discussion as to whether
Encore should come early. We knew there would be a tremendous demand
for this album." A similar tact was used preceding the early release
of Eminem's previous record, and has been used by other labels as a
means of both quelling potential piracy and generating media
attention for an album release.

(Amsterdam) Reuters reported on Wednesday that, for the second
time in a month, the largest newspaper in the Netherlands has used
an amateur photographer's camera phone-snapped picture on its front
page. De Telegraaf, which counts a circulation of 800,000, on
Wednesday published a camera phone picture of Theo van Gogh with
daggers plunged into his chest. A passerby snapped a picture of the
murder victim, a filmmaker who authorities say was likely targeted
by an Islamic militant, before news crews arrived on the scene after
the body had already been covered up. "This picture was the story.
There was a discussion if we should use it, but everyone who would
have had this picture would have published it," Telegraaf pictures
editor Peter Schoonen told Reuters.

(London) U.K. newspaper The Guardian on Wednesday reported on
what U.K. wireless network 3 Mobile is calling the "first live
mobile music gig," where BMG artists Rooster performed live for both
a live audience and about 1,000 3 Mobile subscribers who were
watching on their streaming video-enabled cell phones. 3 Mobile said
that about 10,000 of its 1.2 million 3G service subscribers signed
up to view the 45-minute set, but only the first 1,000 were offered
the chance to pay about $9.20 to watch the wireless set. The company
said the mobile gig was mainly a test to gauge interest in such
services. "It's to prove we can do this," a 3 Mobile spokesperson
told The Guardian. "We thought, let's try it, let's see if people
want it."
