o Report: Video Gamer Demographics Shift to Older Audience

New York -- The video game industry is experiencing a major shift in gamer
demographics, according to a report released on Wednesday by New
York-based analyst firm Jupiter Research. The average console user is
already an adult, the number of high-intensity users is set to grow 40
percent by 2007, and low-intensity puzzle and board games dominate the
favorite genre, Jupiter reports. Recent Jupiter consumer surveys found
that one in ten online adults owns a current generation console. "Much is
made of the maturing games audience, but the reality is that we are there
today -- the median age is 23 years old," said Jupiter's research
director, Michael Gartenberg. The survey also found that 61 percent of
those surveyed cited low-intensity puzzle and board games as their
favorite online game genre. The amount of time spent playing is also
predicted to increase. "We expect the number of gamers that play more than
15 hours per week -- those we dub high-intensity users -- to grow by 40
percent from 12 million to 17 million by 2007," added Gartenberg. Jupiter
also forecasts that revenues for the PC and console games market will top
$14 billion in 2007, up from $11 billion this year.

basis with Microsoft's other telecommunications partners around the world,

Burbank, Calif. -- Grokster, a peer-to-peer online music sharing network,
announced that one-time major label act Insane Clown Posse will promote its new
album, "The Wraith: Shangri-La," on its service. The band released four albums on
Island Records, part of Vivendi Universal's Universal Music Group, between 1997-2000
before the label declined to renew the band's contract in 2001. The new album was
released on the band's own label, Psychopathic Records. The promotion, organized by
Los Angeles-based Net Music Promotions. will give users who register with Burbank,
Calif.-based Grokster the chance to win "Wraith" leather jackets, novelty stand-ups,
autographed posters, baseball caps, T-shirts and other items; additionally, a free
MP3 download of a single from the album will be available on Grokster's start
page. Grokster said it will be "prominently posting messages to users to
'Support the Artist. Buy the Record!'"

(San Francisco) The Associated Press on Wednesday reported on the
anti-piracy technologies being included in nascent audio formats such as
Super Audio CD (SACD) and DVD-Audio, on which major record labels are
increasingly releasing new albums. Both formats feature higher tonal
quality and a fuller audio range, as well as digital watermarks --
provided by firms including San Diego-based Verance -- that prevent
duplicated discs from playing in proprietary players. "With
high-resolution audio, the need for secure interfaces becomes even
greater, since the quality of audio on such formats as SACD is virtually
indistinguishable from the master," Sony spokesman David Migdal told AP.

(San Francisco) CNET News.com on Wednesday reported on how yesterday's
election and turnover of Senate power to the Republican party is likely to
affect technology issues. One result could be the thwarting of soon-to-be
ex-Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Ernest "Fritz" Hollings'
controversial bill that would mandate government-approved copyright
protection be placed in most consumer electronics devices. The article
also quotes an Information Technology Industry Council review that found
Senate Republicans voted in line with the technology industry's viewpoints
84 percent of the time, compared with 65 percent of the time for
Democrats.
