o Grokster File-Sharing
Service Shuts Down, Settles Copyright Litigation
Washington - The Associated Press reported on Monday that
peer-to-peer file-sharing software provider Grokster has agreed to
shut down and settle copyright infringement litigation brought by
the movie and music industries. ''There are legal services for
downloading music and movies,'' reads a note on the Grokser website.
''This service is not one of them.'' Grokster was a losing defendant
in the landmark Supreme Court ruling earlier this year, which found
that such providers of file-sharing software could be held liable
for copyright infringement committed by users of the software. "This
settlement brings to a close an incredibly significant chapter in
the story of digital music," said Mitch Bainwol, CEO of the
Recording Industry Association of America. "This is a chapter that
ends on a high note for the recording industry, the tech community
and music fans and consumers everywhere." The settlement between
Nevis, West Indies-based Grokster and the record labels and movie
studios suing it for copyright infringement calls for the company to
cease distributing its software. In September, The Wall Street
Journal reported that Grokster was in talks to be acquired by
Mashboxx, a legal peer-to-peer file-sharing service being developed
by former Grokster president Wayne Rosso.

o N.Y.
Times: Microsoft Is Front-Runner For Stake in AOL
Dulles, Va. - The New York Times reported on Monday that
Microsoft "has emerged as the front-runner" in talks for a potential
stake in America Online. Google and Yahoo are also reportedly
interested in a stake -- and the formation of a far-reaching
partnership with America Online. However, the article said that
America Online parent Time Warner has discovered that reaching such
a deal is more difficult than it expected. "Behind the scenes, a
number of questions remain that could hold up or even derail a
potential transaction," the article said. "One is whether such an
alliance would represent yet another new and unproven partnership
for Time Warner, a company that has spent much of its energy in
recent years trying to simplify its business."

o WSJ: News
Corp.'s Murdoch Considering U.S. Broadband Service
Chicago - News Corporation CEO Rupert Murdoch is
considering launching a high-speed Internet service in the U.S., The
Wall Street Journal reported. "We may be forming a company with
partners to build something out here that would give you broadband,"
Murdoch told The Journal. Murdoch also commented that more consumers
will be interested in broadband once high-definition camcorders
become widely adopted. The owner of the 20th Century Fox movie
studio and Fox TV channels recently launched a new media unit, Fox
Interactive, to oversee its online operations. The company's Web
units include social networking service MySpace.com, recently
acquired by News Corp. for $580 million.

Gets 3-Month Sentence for Sharing Movies on BitTorrent
Hong Kong - In the world's first conviction of its kind, a
Hong Kong man has been sentenced to three months in prison for using
the BitTorrent peer-to-peer file-sharing network to offer pirated
versions of Hollywood films for free download. Chan Nai-Ming, 38,
was convicted for offering copies of "Daredevil," "Miss
Congeniality" and "Red Planet" on BitTorrent. Nai-Ming is the first
person sent to prison for offering movies on BitTorrent.

o Yahoo Pays
$500 Million to Acquire Stakes in Overseas Units from Softbank
Sunnyvale, Calif. - Yahoo announced on Monday that it will
purchase the remaining stakes in its Yahoo Europe and Yahoo Korea
units from Japan's Softbank. Yahoo will pay a total of $500 million
to Softbank for the 30% stake in Yahoo UK, Yahoo Germany and Yahoo
France, and 33% in Yahoo Korea that Softbank holds, giving Yahoo
complete control over the foreign subsidiaries. "This agreement to
purchase the remaining shares not already owned by Yahoo! in Europe
and Korea demonstrates the confidence we have in our international
businesses and our commitment to deliver long-term shareholder
value," said Yahoo chairman and CEO Terry Semel. "By buying out
Softbank's JV interests, our strategic flexibility to take advantage
of international growth opportunities in Korea and Europe will be
enhanced, and this new structure should lead to a more efficient,
longer-term operating and tax model."

o Report: Most U.K.
Consumers Uninterested in Mobile TV
London - According to a new survey conducted by
Entertainment Media Research, most mobile phone owners in the U.K.
have little desire to watch TV on their handsets, preferring instead
to watch it on their PCs, which are quickly becoming extra "TV sets"
in the home. More than 70% of the 1,500 people surveyed said they
were uninterested in watching TV on their mobiles. About 45% of
respondents said they watched TV on their home PCs because it
allowed them to choose what they wanted to watch and when they
wanted to watch it. PCs also allow consumers to watch TV while doing
other things; for instance, roughly half said they surf the Internet
and send emails -- while approximately a third use IM -- while
watching television on their PCs.

7,500 hotspots operated by The Cloud and BT across the U.K. Nintendo
said the service would be up and running by Nov. 25 in the U.K. and
on the rest of the Continent by an unspecified date. The first games
