o Report:
U.K. Digital TV Subsidy to Cost Government $997 Million
London - According to a new report from Ofcom, the U.K.
telecommunications watchdog, TV viewers reluctant to move to digital
TV could ultimately cost the government more than $997 million to
convert from analog. The digital switchover is scheduled to take
place, region by region, between 2008 and 2012. Currently, about 63%
of U.K. households watch digital TV and about 200,000 make the
switch to digital every month. However, Ofcom estimates that as many
as 10% of all U.K. households will need either financial help or
"encouragement" to switch to the digital signal. The regulator has
placed the cost of switching each household at approximately $230.

o Philips
Introduces amBX "Sensory Surround" Video Game Technology
Redhill, U.K. - Electronics firm Philips on Tuesday
introduced a new gaming technology, amBX, that will generate light,
color, sound, heat and blown-air feedback from video games in the
living room. "Imagine the room of the future, where all electronic
devices are amBX-enabled. The treacherous road to Saigon will turn
your room jungle green, swimming with dolphins will splash it deep
blue, 'Halo' jumps will turn your fans on full, lightning storms
will strobe your white lighting, and attack ships on fire off the
shoulder of Orion will blast on your heaters," Philips said in a
statement. The amBX technology will incorporate a scripting language
that directs the different feedback elements to LED color-controlled
lights, active furniture, fans, heaters, and audio and video
devices. "For games creators this is a fantastic opportunity: amBX
expands the immersive experience by bringing the real world
environment into the gameplay," said Philips amBX chief marketing
officer Jo Cooke. "The creative possibilities, using this
technology, for the games industry and beyond are immense." Philips
expects to launch the technology in May 2006.

o EMI to Sell
Digital Downloads of John Lennon Solo Catalog
London - Major record label EMI Music announced on Tuesday
that it will for the first time offer John Lennon's solo catalog for

embraced and this is something he would have loved," said Lennon's
widow, Yoko Ono. "I always say that he would have been very excited
by all the opportunities offered by the development of new means of
communication. For people who still love John's music and for those
now getting into John's music, this opens up a whole new world in
which they can appreciate John's music again." While Lennon's solo
tracks may now be available, the vast and potentially lucrative
catalog from his band the Beatles is still yet to be licensed for
