o Sirius Revenue Doubles on Strong Subscriber Growth

New York - Sirius Satellite Radio announced on Wednesday that its third-quarter revenue more than doubled, on strong subscriber growth. Revenue was $167.1 million, up from $66.8 million a year ago, while the company added over 441,000 net subscribers during the third quarter to finish with 5.1 million. The subscriber boost was credited to purchasers of new cars with satellite receivers. Sirius also narrowed its loss to $162.9 million for the quarter, down from $180.5 million last year. The company still expects to count 6.3 million subscribers by the end of the year; rival XM's year-end projection is for between 7.7 million and 7.9 million subscribers.

o AOL Acquires Search Technology Firm Relegence

Dulles, Va. - AOL said on Wednesday that it has acquired Relegence, a New York-based developer of financial news and information search technology. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Relegence and its 60 employees will continue to be headquartered in New York, with offices in London and Tel Aviv. It will operate as a subsidiary of AOL. Founded in 1999, Relegence sells subscription-based services that simultaneously monitor, index and filter more than 20,000 live content streams, then deliver the information to users. The streams include local and international newswires, print media, television and cable networks, regulatory feeds, corporate and information web sites and Internet bulletin boards. AOL said that it will use the technology in its efforts to develop its publishing and content management platform. Relegence is AOL's fifth acquisition this year.

o Google to Begin Test of Service that Sells U.S. Radio Ads Online

Los Angeles - Google plans to begin testing a version of its AdWords online advertising sales system for the terrestrial radio market by the end of the year, Reuters reported. The confirmation of the Google Audio Ads service test from Google spokesman Michael Mayzel follows the company's announcement this week that it will also expand into selling print advertising in 50 U.S. newspapers. In January, Google acquired dMarc Broadcasting, a company that sells radio ad space online. "Google is hiring salespeople in most major markets and they're hiring sales people to sell radio," Bill Figenshu, chief operating officer at dMarc rival Softwave Media Exchange, told Reuters. Figenshu added that three people he had spoken with said Google is in talks to buy $1 billion in radio ad inventory from Clear Channel.

o Atari Secures $15 Million Credit Line, Hints at Recovery

New York - Beleaguered video game publisher Atari announced on Wednesday that it has secured a new three-year, $15 million credit facility with Guggenheim Corporate Funding. The company will use the funds for working capital to support day-to-day operations. Earlier this week, Atari announced plans to seek approval from shareholders for a reverse stock split and reduction in total shares in a bid to bolster its share price above the Nasdaq's $1 minimum requirement for continued listing. Bruno Bonnell, the chairman of Atari and CEO of France-based Atari parent company Infogrames, told a chat session with French newspaper Les Echoes that Atari's first-half earnings, due Thursday, would show a recovery. "We will unveil tomorrow figures for our American first-half that will confirm the recovery of our operations," Bonnell said. "If we need to reorganize the management of the company, I will be open to it, but only once we have restored financial stability that will allow management to build a solid platform and not, as it is the case today, to tactically react to financial deadlines," Bonnell added. "A captain does not abandon the ship in the midst of a storm."

o Sundance, GSM Association Commission Short Films for Cell Phones

New York - Robert Redford's Sundance Institute announced on Wednesday that it has partnered with the mobile industry's GSM Association, which represents 700 operators worldwide, to commission the creation of short films for distribution on cell phones. The Sundance Film Festival: Global Short Film Project has asked six independent filmmakers to create five short films exclusively for mobile distribution. All of the selected filmmakers --Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris; Justin Lin; Maria Maggenti; Cory McAbee; and Jody Hill -- have all had films screen at the Sundance Festival. "Cell phones are fast becoming the 'fourth screen' medium, after television, cinema and computers," said Sundance Institute president and founder Robert Redford. "We feel this experiment embodies fully, our quarter-century dedication to exploring new platforms to support wider distribution of independent voices in filmmaking." The short films created for the project will premiere on the opening day of the 3GSM World Congress next February in Barcelona, and will later be made available for broader distribution through mobile carriers following the event.

o Gizmondo Exec Takes Plea Deal; Will Serve 3 Years

Los Angeles - Following last week's mistrial of a former executive at defunct handheld game maker Gizmondo, defendant Stefan Eriksson has accepted a plea agreement from prosecutors that includes three years in prison and a $5,000 fine. Eriksson, who notably crashed a rare Ferrari Enzo while traveling 162 mph on Malibu's Pacific Coast Highway and later claimed the car was in the control of a nonexistent driver, faced charges of embezzlement, grand theft and illegally possessing a weapon in the original trial. Eriksson claimed at trial that he defaulted on payments on two other expensive cars only after Gizmondo went bankrupt. "Essentially, it was what Stefan wanted to do," Eriksson's attorney, Jim Parkman, told GameDaily.biz, referring to the deal. "Stefan had concerns over all; about both the cost and energy of continuing the case."

o Nielsen Recalls Game Report; Will Evaluate "Active Gamer" Definition

Los Angeles - Ratings firm Nielsen Entertainment announced on Wednesday that it is reevaluating a custom research study on "active video gamers" its Nielsen Interactive division released last month, adding that its market-size data and definition of "active gamer" are under review. The company "recalled" a press release from Oct. 5 announcing the report, which Nielsen said "revealed conflicting information that had not been resolved before the report was released to the market." The Oct. 5 release stated that there are 117 million active gamers in the U.S., defined as those who play upwards of five hours per week.

o Wired News: Microsoft Zune Demo Review

San Francisco - A Wired News blog on Wednesday posted a review of Microsoft's forthcoming Zune digital media player, gleaned from a chance to demo the device at a press event in Manhattan. Notable features included the ability to wirelessly transfer MP3s as well as WMA files -- although the unprotected MP3s will also time-out after three listens on the recipient's Zune. Wireless transfers took about 10-15 seconds per song; the Zune also supports transfer of playlists and full albums. "Overall I found the device incredibly easy to use," the review concluded. "Microsoft clearly learned a few lessons, including the all-important one about device simplicity, from Apple's iPod before bringing the Zune to market."

o NYTimes: Bloggers Cover Polling Problems on Election Day

New York - The New York Times on Wednesday reported on how blogs took the lead yesterday in reporting polling problems on Election Day. Blogs such as RedState.com, Bradblog.com and Talking Points Memo cited reports of problems with electronic voting machines and other issues, often linking to videos posted on YouTube. "In a lot of ways they're helping to set the agenda for the mainstream media in fast-moving events like this," Jonathan Zittrain, an Oxford professor and co-founder of Harvard's Berkman Center for Internet and Society, told The Times. "They just need to be able to produce enough that's credible quickly to give a lead."
