o Microsoft
to Share Cut of Zune Player Sales With Universal, Other Labels
New York - Microsoft announced on Thursday that it will
pay a portion of profits from the sale of its Zune digital media
player to Universal Music Group, and offer similar arrangements to
other labels. Figuring as Microsoft's bid to challenge the market
dominated by Apple's iPod, the Zune is set to go on sale next
Tuesday. "We believe that the music consumer will appreciate knowing
that when they buy a Zune device, they are helping to support their
favorite artists," said Bryan Lee, corporate vice president,
Microsoft Entertainment & Devices. The New York Times, citing
executives who were briefed on the pact, reported that Universal
expects to receive more than $1 from the sale of each $250 Zune
player. Apple does not provide record labels with a cut of iPod
sales. "This move demonstrates there can be a win-win situation
where consumers have a great experience while labels and artists are
also fairly compensated," said Universal Music Group chairman and
CEO Doug Morris.

o "World of
Warcraft" Subs Hit 7.5 Million; Expansion Due Jan. 16
Irvine, Calif. - Continuing the meteoric rise of its
massively multiplayer online game, Blizzard Entertainment announced
on Thursday that "World of Warcraft" now claims 7.5 million players
worldwide. The Vivendi-owned game publisher plans to release a major
expansion to the game, "World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade," on
Jan. 16 in North America and Europe, and soon after in Korea,
Australia, Singapore and other territories. The $39 expansion pack
will include features such as two new playable races, new talents
and abilities for all character classes, new magical weapons and
armor, and many enhancements to player-vs.-player action. The
original "World of Warcraft" game now sells for $19.99; players also
pay a $15 per month subscription fee for online access to the game.

o Majority
of Top U.S. Sites Now Drawing Most Traffic from Abroad
London - Fourteen of the top 25 U.S. Web properties
attract more traffic from people outside the U.S. than from within,
according to a new study by comScore Networks. Among them are the
top five Web properties in the U.S. -- Yahoo, Time Warner Network,
Microsoft, Google and eBay. "As Internet usage outside the U.S. has
grown rapidly from a small base, the U.S. share of the world's
online population has fallen from 65% to less than 25% in the last
10 years," said Bob Ivins, the managing director of comScore Europe.
Ivins said that more than three-quarters of the traffic to Google,
Yahoo and Microsoft is now coming from outside of the U.S.

o Napster
Narrows Loss, Sees Boost in Revenue, Site Visitors
Los Angeles - Napster has announced that its
second-quarter net loss narrowed to $9 million, down from $13.6
million a year ago, while revenue was up 9% to $25.5 million. Unique
visitors to Napster.com grew 42% in the quarter, which the company
said will help grow its new ad-supported free music service. The
company announced that its subscriber base is now 518,000, including
31,000 university subscribers. During a conference call with
analysts, Napster CEO Chris Gorog focused on the potential of the
company's mobile music services; Napster recently launched mobile
downloads in Japan with NTT DoCoMo and a mobile subscription service
in the U.S. for Cingular subscribers. "We believe the dramatic
growth projected for music-enabled cell phones will provide a very
significant growth driver for Napster going forward," said Gorog.
"It would be difficult to overestimate how important we believe the
Windows Media Audio music phone ecosystems will be to catalyzing the
growth of our business." In September, Napster hired UBS Investment
Bank to explore the possibility of a sale of the company or
partnership. Napster still expects to see solid double-digit annual
revenue growth during 2007.

o NYTimes: Tech Columnist David Pogue's
Zune Review
New York - New York Times technology columnist David
Pogue on Thursday published a mixed review of Microsoft's Zune
digital media player. The player is "excellent" and "sounds just as
good as the iPod," but is larger and heavier and "can't touch the
iPod's looks or coolness." Pogue was not particularly impressed with
the Zune's touted wireless sharing feature, which he said includes
"draconian copy protection on beamed music" that is "as strict as a
19th-century schoolmarm." Pogue criticized the Zune Marketplace for
being "dog-slow," and for its lack of TV shows, movies and podcasts.
The store also lacks features available on Apple's iTunes Store,
like gift certificates, allowances and user-submitted playlists.
"Competition is good and all. But what, exactly, is the point of the
Zune? It seems like an awful lot of duplication -- in a bigger,
heavier form with fewer features -- just to indulge Microsoft’s 'we
want some o' that' envy," Pogue concludes.
