o Report: October Game Sales Flat; Hardware Drives 16% Growth

New York - The overall video game market saw sales rise 16% during the month of October, boosted mainly by hardware sales, as game sales were essentially flat during the month, according to market data from NPD Group. Game sales were up just 1% in October, to $369 million. Top-selling titles during the month included Vivendi's "Scarface," Ubisoft's "Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Double Agent" and Electronic Arts' "Madden NFL 06." NPD analyst Anita Frazier looked to the average retail price of games for the downturn, telling GameDaily.com that top games cost less this year than they did a year ago, due to price drops, and lower-priced handheld device games were also more popular in general. On the hardware side, NPD recorded a 56% increase in sales in October, fueled by strong sales of the Nintendo DS and PlayStation 2, which both outsold Microsoft's Xbox 360. Total industry sales for October came in at $642 million, up 16% from $556 million last October.

o U.S. Permanently Bans U.K. Gambling Site BetOnSports

St. Louis - U.K. online gambling site BetOnSports on Thursday settled civil charges filed by U.S. prosecutors, agreeing to permanently ban any wagers placed from the U.S., the Associated Press reported. The settlement does not apply to separate criminal charges the U.S. brought against BetOnSports CEO David Carruthers, who was arrested while traveling through the U.S. in July, and other BetOnSports employees. Carruthers, who is currently under house arrest in Missouri, will face fraud and racketeering charges in a trial slated to begin in early 2007. As part of the civil settlement, BetOnSports will set up a toll-free number to inform U.S. bettors how they can reclaim unsettled bets. The company must also take out a newspaper ad telling consumers that it will no longer accept U.S. bets, and post similar statements on its websites.

o Report: Most Viewers Watch Recorded TV Shows Within 3 Days

New York - Most owners of digital video recorders play back recorded TV shows within three days of their airing, according to a report from Nielsen Media Research. Seventy-eight percent of U.S. households with digital video recorders watched their recorded shows within two days of their airing, while 84% had watched them within three days. Among viewers age 18-49, 76% watched broadcast primetime shows within two days, while 84% watched primetime cable shows and 85% viewed time-shifted syndicated shows within two days. By the third day, those percentages rose to 84% for primetime broadcast, 90% for primetime cable and 91% for total syndication. Overall, Nielsen found that 22.9% of primetime TV viewing time in digital video recorder households is recorded programming. "The TV landscape is changing rapidly, and as consumers increasingly decide for themselves when to watch their favorite shows, Nielsen will establish new means to track their behavior," said Pat McDonough, Nielsen Media Research's senior vice president of planning and analysis."

o Struggling Atari Posts Slim Profit, but Revenues Fall 25%

New York - Atari, which recently announced plans for a stock split to boost its sagging share price above the $1 Nasdaq minimum, posted a slim second-quarter profit of $311,000, but revenues at the struggling game publisher fell 25% from a year ago. The company's losses shrank to $9.5 million, down from $22.3 million a year ago, while revenues were $28.6 million, down from $38.4 million in the second quarter of 2005. The company recently named David Pierce as its new president and CEO. Pierce has taken steps including securing a $15 million credit facility and selling off Atari's Shiny game development studio in a bid to bolster the company's financials.

The more than 8 million BSkyB subscribers with access to Fame TV will be able to vote for their favorite videos via text message. o NYTimes: Start-ups Shun VC Firms for Smaller Sums, Angel Investors

New York - The New York Times on Friday reported on how a growing number of new start-up technology companies are not looking to venture capitalists as much for financing, instead targeting angel investors who provide smaller sums and less interference. "We had a bunch of VCs talking to us about potentially putting more money in," Seth Sternberg, a founder of start-up Meebo, told The Times. "We said no. A lot of things happen when you raise a VC round, and they really slow you down." Last week, Charles River Ventures attempted to adapt to the new trend by offering $250,000 loans to entrepreneurs. "I came to the conclusion that $500,000 was the new $5 million," Michael Maples Jr., an entrepreneur who created a $15 million venture fund aimed at investing in companies that require little capital, told The Times.
