o Video Game Trade Group Increasing Anti-Piracy Efforts in Brazil

Sao Paolo, Brazil -- The Interactive Digital Software Association (IDSA),
a trade group representing video game publishers, announced on Tuesday
that it has expanded its alliance with Associacao Brasileira das Empresas
de Software (ABES) to combat video game piracy in Brazil. "Brazil
represents an important market for the members of IDSA due to the immense
popularity of interactive entertainment among Brazilians, said IDSA
president Douglas Lowenstein. "Unfortunately, Brazil also ranks among the
most significant problem countries in the world when it comes to game
piracy, with the piracy rate exceeding 70 percent." The IDSA has hired the
Sao Paolo law firm of Manoel Antonio Dos Santos to help increase
anti-piracy activities, and will work with ABES to act against Brazilian
"promocenters," where pirated games are widely available.

(London) NewScientist.com on Tuesday reported on research from two
Stanford University students that could provide a way to combat the
"hacking" measures that entertainment firms have asked legislators to make
legal for them to combat piracy on file-sharing networks. Neil Daswani and
Hector Garcia-Molina of the Database Research Department at Stanford have
developed a new method for communication between "nodes" and "supernodes"
on the Gnutella network they say would lessen the effect of technological
attacks from entertainment companies, which would become protected under
proposed legislation called The P2P Piracy Prevention Act, introduced by
Sen. Howard Berman (D-Ca.).
