o Sony, Philips Acquire InterTrust Technologies for $453 Million

Santa Clara, Calif. -- InterTrust, a developer of digital rights
management technologies, announced on Wednesday that Fidelio Acquisition
Company, an entity created by consumer electronics firms Sony and Philips,
and other investors, will acquire the company in a deal valued at $453
million. Santa Clara, Calif.-based InterTrust holds 26 U.S. patents and
has 85 patent applications pending worldwide for its technology, which
secures and regulates the transmission of music, movies and other media
over the Internet. "Throughout Sony on a global scale, we operate with a
keen awareness that the future growth of the consumer electronics,
computer and entertainment industries will be heavily influenced by the
ability to transmit digital content in a secure environment," said Sony
chairman and CEO Nobuyuki Idei. InterTrust is also currently embroiled in
patent litigation with Microsoft, which the company says is infringing on
its digital rights management technology in various Windows Media
programs.

o FCC Approves Comcast-AT&T Broadband Merger

Washington, DC -- The Federal Communications Commission on Wednesday
approved Comcast's proposed merger of rival cable operator AT&T Broadband,
clearing the way for the nation's Number 1 and Number 3 cable operators to
unite. The combined company will have 22 million subscribers and control
40 percent of the cable television market. Both Comcast and AT&T had
argued that the deal would allow them to more quickly roll out such
services as digital television and high-speed Internet. Detractors,
however, say that having one company with such market dominance will lead
to higher prices. AT&T agreed to sell its cable television business to
Comcast in December for about $45.7 billion in stock, plus the assumption
of nearly $25 billion in debt and liabilities.

o EMI Inks Deals to Sell Permanent Downloads Though Online Services

London -- Major record label EMI Recorded Music announced on Wednesday
that it has licensed songs from its catalog to be sold as permanent
downloads through a number of online distributors. The download format
will also enable consumers to transfer a limited number of copies to
portable devices or burn to CD. London-based EMI said it reached
agreements with digital music subscription services and distributors
Alliance Entertainment, Ecast, FullAudio, Liquid Audio, Listen.com's
Rhapsody, MusicNet, Pressplay, Roxio and Streamwaves to provide "tens of
thousands" of tracks as permanent downloads.

o Report: 28% of U.S. Online Households Now Connect Via Broadband

Stamford, Conn. -- The rate of broadband use in U.S. households has nearly
tripled in the last two-plus years, according to a new study by
Connecticut-based research firm Gartner Dataquest, which finds that 28
percent of U.S. online households connect to the Internet via a broadband
connection. "Neither the economic slowdown, or the relatively high price
points for DSL, cable modem and other broadband access modalities have
slowed adoption or demand for these access services," said Gartner
Dataquest principal analyst Margaret Schoener.
