o Report: U.S. Consumer Spending for Online Content Up 14% to $853 Million

New York -- U.S. consumer spending for online content grew to $853 million in the first half of 2004, an increase of 14% over the same period last year, according to a study conducted by comScore Networks on behalf of the Online Publishers Association. The online personals and dating category maintained its position as the most popular category of paid online content, accounting for $227.9 million of the total, although the category registered a decline for the first time after two and a half years of rapid growth. The entertainment and lifestyles category overtook business and investments as the second most-popular form of online content, growing 78.3% to $182.1 million -- fueled primarily by growth in the music segment. The report also noted that paid online sports content spending grew 68.7%, while spending on online games grew 27.4% in the first half of the year. "For the first time ever, growth in paid content spending was fueled primarily by consumers using the Internet for entertainment and for fun," said Online Publishers Association president Michael Zimbalist. "This supports a growing body of evidence that consumers' use of the Internet is evolving far beyond functional activities. We believe that online entertainment will continue to grow as broadband proliferates." Overall, 90% of paid content revenue came through subscription sales -- the highest percentage yet recorded -- driven by a significant shift from single purchases to the subscription model in the games, news and research categories.

o Dow Jones Acquires Financial News Site MarketWatch for $519 Million

New York -- Dow Jones, which publishes The Wall Street Journal, announced on Monday that it has acquired San Francisco-based MarketWatch, a provider of business news and financial information, for $519 million. The deal calls for MarketWatch shareholders to receive $18 per share, a premium of about 7.2% over the company's closing share price on Friday. Other interested bidders for MarketWatch reportedly included Viacom, Yahoo and The New York Times. "By combining Dow Jones' legendary brands, infrastructure and valuable strategic alliances with MarketWatch's award-winning newsroom and comprehensive suite of business and analytical tools, this transaction supports our mission to be the market leader in licensed and advertising supported financial news and information," said MarketWatch CEO Larry Kramer.

o Report: Q3 Online Ad Sales Total $2.43 Billion; Global Standards Approved

New York -- Online ad sales during the third quarter of 2004 totaled $2.43 billion, up 35.3% from the same period a year ago and 2.4% over second quarter totals, according to data from the New York-based Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB). Online ad revenue so far this year is estimated at $7 billion, which already surpasses 2003's $7.3 billion annual total, and could yet potentially break the $8 billion record set in 2000. The Interactive Advertising Bureau also announced that key industry bodies have agreed on the first-ever global standards for measuring the effectiveness of online advertising, approved by groups including the Advertising Research Foundation, American Association of Advertising Agencies, World Federation of Advertisers and ESOMAR. The new standards say that publishers must count an ad impression only upon delivery to an end user, and not when it leaves an advertiser's server; they also prohibit counting traffic generated by "spiders" or "bots" trolling the Internet, and recommends third-party independent auditing and certification guidelines for all ad-serving applications. "These guidelines demonstrate our continued commitment to being the most accountable ad medium. In just 10 short years we rocketed forward by offering marketers a whole new experience for measuring ad campaigns," said IAB CEO Greg Stuart.

o Europe Set to Outspend U.S. With $16.8 Billion in Online Holiday Sales

Paris -- According to a new report by market analysis firm Forrester Research, European online sales are likely to exceed $16.8 billion during this year's holiday season -- about $3.9 billion more than online American shoppers are expected spend over the same period. In fact, Forrester predicted a European shopping boom this Christmas, saying it expected Internet sales there to increase by 44% compared to the same period last year. The research firm attributed the remarkable growth to an increase in wealthy online shoppers and a push by traditional retailers to get more involved in e-commerce. The U.K. and Germany will account for the lion's share of spending this year, with 36% and 29% of the overall market, respectively. France is set to come in third place, with 9% of the EU online shopping market, Forrester predicted.

o Tacoda Online Ad Network to Target Users Based on Web Surfing Habits

New York -- Online marketing firm Tacoda on Monday announced the launch of a new online advertising network that will enable advertisers to bid on audiences determined by their Web surfing habits, such as "sports fans," "technology enthusiasts" or "business travelers." The AudienceMatch Network will not personally identify users but instead group them based on the websites they visit and the content they access there, and then auction placement of ads to these users to advertisers who will pay only when their ads are clicked on. New York-based Tacoda's new network will initially consist of 60 sites, including USAToday.com, and 100 advertisers, eventually ramping up to a thousand sites and advertisers during a two-month launch phase. The company claims its network will eventually reach more than 85 million individuals, or about 60% of the monthly U.S. Internet audience.

o Electronic Arts Bids on Remaining Stake in Swedish Developer Digital Illusions

Redwood City, Calif. -- Video game publisher Electronic Arts on Monday announced an offer for the remaining shares of Swedish game developer Digital Illusions (DICE) it doesn't already own. In 2003, Electronic Arts purchased about 19% of DICE, which has developed titles for EA including "Battlefield 1942" and "Battlefield Vietnam," in addition to Microsoft Game Studios' "RalliSport Challenge" franchise. DICE has recommended that its shareholders accept EA's offer. EA said it plans to double DICE's employees, and sees the purchase as accelerating its readiness for the transition to the next generation of game consoles. Separately, EA on Monday shipped its "Need for Speed Underground 2" title for PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, Game Boy Advance and the PC to retailers. Developed in Vancouver by EA Canada, the sequel to the 8 million unit-selling original features tracks from Xzibit, Chingy, Mudvayne, and figures as the first medium for the release of Snoop Dogg's remix of The Doors' "Riders On The Storm."
