o Sony BMG Recalls "Rootkit" CDs;
Software Fix May Also Cause Problems
Washington - Sony BMG has announced that it will recall
millions of CDs that contained anti-piracy software that can damage
PCs, and offered to exchange copies purchased by consumers, USA
Today reported. Sony said that more than 4 million copies of 20
albums featuring the software were manufactured, 2.1 million of
which have already been sold. Citing data from security researcher
Dan Kaminsky, The Washington Post reports that the controversial "rootkit"
anti-piracy technology -- which Microsoft yesterday dubbed malicious
software and began efforts to remove from Windows PCs -- is
installed on more than half a million computer networks in at least
165 countries. The Sony BMG software, developed by First 4 Internet
to prevent users from making unauthorized song copies, hides itself
deep within a PC's operating system. The rootkit used to hide the
anti-piracy software can be also utilized by virus writers to hide
their tracks; trying to remove the software can also permanently
damage a PC's ability to play CDs. Meanwhile, the San Jose Mercury
News reports that security researchers have found that the patch
Sony BMG posted to remove the offensive software may actually cause
more problems than the rootkit itself. "The consequences of the flaw
are severe,'' Princeton computer science professor Ed Felten and
graduate student J. Alex Halderman wrote in a blog posting. "It
allows any Web page you visit to download, install and run any code
it likes on your computer."

Friendster Hires Bankers to Seek Buyers for Company
San Francisco - Social networking site Friendster has
hired an investment banking firm to explore strategic options,
including a possible sale of the company, CNET News.com reported on
Tuesday, citing sources familiar with the matter. The company hired
Santa Monica, Calif.-based Montgomery & Co. to help it seek
prospective buyers. Company executives also reportedly sought a
merger with Internet media firms earlier this year, with an asking
price of $200 million -- a figure that has since dropped to $50 to
$100 million. Meanwhile, Friendster rival MySpace.com -- whose
traffic has risen 840% while Friendster's has fallen off by half --
was recently acquired by News Corp. for $580 million.

o IFPI Sues
2,100 Internet Song-Swappers in Europe
London - The International Federation of Phonographic
Industry (IFPI) announced that it has launched its largest wave of
legal action against people suspected of illegally sharing music
files on the Internet. The IFPI said its latest move would target
more than 2,100 uploaders using peer-to-peer networks in 16
countries including France, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Switzerland and
the U.K. The group said that in previous actions, defendants have
paid an average of $3,000 each to settle copyright infringement
claims. Separately, the IFPI announced that legal U.K. single track
music downloads reached more than 16.9 million for the first three
quarters of 2005, compared with 2.7 million during 2004, while
illegal downloads have dropped by 10% between 2003 (1.1 billion) and
2005 (900 million).

Super-High-Speed College P2P Network i2Hub Shut Down
San Francisco - A file-sharing network that operated on
Internet2, the private, super-high-speed network utilized by
universities and research institutions, has been shut down, CNET
News.com reported. Launched in early 2004, the i2Hub network offered
students on campuses that supported Internet2 lightning-quick
downloads of movies, music and games. The site drew the ire of the
Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in September, when
it sued dozens of i2Hub users for copyright infringement; the RIAA
and MPAA that same month would also join the Internet2 project, with
a stated goal to collaborate on "innovative content distribution and
digital rights management technologies, and to study emerging trends
on high-performance networks to enable future business models." The
founder of i2Hub, Wayne Chang, declined to comment on the network's
closure for CNET News.com, citing "potential legal concerns." A note
on the i2Hub website reads simply: "R.I.P. 03.14.2004 - 11.14.2005."

o U.S. Online
Newspaper Readership Rises 11% in October
New York - As the print circulation of newspapers
continues to decline, traffic to their respective web sites is
growing at a rapid pace, according to new research from Nielsen/NetRatings.
During October, newspaper site traffic grew 11% to 39.3 million
unique visitors, or one out of every four U.S. Internet users. The
increase far exceeded the growth of the active Internet universe as
a whole, which rose 3% from the previous year. Among newspaper
readers, 22% said that they have shifted their readership
preferences from offline to online sources. The majority of readers,
71%, still prefer print newspapers, while 7% divide their time
evenly between the two sources. NYTimes.com was the top U.S. online
newspaper site, with 11.4 million unique visitors in October,
followed by USATODAY.com and WashingtonPost.com, with 10.4 and 8.1
million, respectively.

o Report: Online
DVD Rental Market to Reach $3 Billion in 2009
London - The online DVD rental market in the U.S. and
Europe will exceed $1 billion and 6.3 million subscribers in 2005,
growing to almost $3 billion by 2009, according to a report from
London-based market research firm Screen Digest. More than 381
million rental DVDs will be delivered to U.S. customers in 2005 --
the lion's share to Netflix's 3.5 million subscribers -- while 45
million DVDs will be rented online in Europe. In the U.K., where

all rentals, online rentals are projected to account for half the
market in 2009. In greater Europe, online rentals made up
one-fiftieth of consumer spending in 2004, but are expected to grow
to account for one-third of the rental market by 2009.
