o Hughes, Sun, Polycom Plan Broadband Satellite Internet Service

Germantown, Md. -- Hughes Network Systems has announced a partnership with
Sun Microsystems and convergence technology firm Polycom to create a
network that will deliver high-speed Internet services to both businesses
and consumers in North America via satellite. The Spaceway network --
scheduled to launch in 2003 -- will use a peer-to-peer architecture to
beam data to and from users who install the DirecTV-sized satellites on
their homes or businesses. Hughes has invested $1.5 billion in the
network, and announced today the creation of a new facility where 100
developers will design software compatible with the network.

o DOJ, FTC Plan Joint Hearings on Antitrust, Intellectual Property

Washington, D.C. -- The antitrust division of the U.S. Dept. of Justice
announced that it will co-host hearings with the Federal Trade Commission
on the relationship of antitrust law and intellectual property law. Topics
covered at the hearings will include "the importance of the various types
of intellectual property to businesses and innovation, the frequency and
types of licensing, pooling and other arrangements for transfer or joint
use of intellectual property, competition issues in patent settlements and
unilateral refusals to deal involving intellectual property." The hearings
are scheduled to begin in January 2002. "It is incumbent on government
policy makers to understand the implications of the actions they take in
this area, and I look forward to receiving valuable input from relevant
business, legal, academic and government groups through these hearings,"
said Assistant Attorney General Charles A. James.

o Online Ad Firm Burst Media Lays Off 35% of Staff

Burlington, Mass. -- Burst Media, a provider of online advertising
technology and services, has laid off 24 employees, or about 35% of its
total workforce, and closed its offices in Dallas, Atlanta and Los
Angeles, MassHighTech.com reported. Massachusetts-based Burst Media blamed
the current advertising downturn as reasoning for the layoffs. The
company's sales have been flagging since late 2000 with the drop in demand
for banner advertising, the article said. In October, Burst Media was
named the 6th fastest-growing technology company in New England by
Deloitte and Touche for the years 1996-2000.

Prelude Trust, ACT Venture Capital and TTP Ventures were among those
participating in the investment round. U.K.-based Alphamosaic was spun-off
from Cambridge Consultants Limited, a development and design firm. The
company is positioning its technology for use with mobile devices that
offer video email, videoconferencing, streaming, and camcorder
functionality.

o Online Ad Technology Firm HiWire Raises $9.5 Million in Third Round

Los Angeles -- HiWire, a developer of technology that inserts advertising
into streaming media, announced that it has raised $9.5 million in its
third round of venture capital financing. Among those participating in the
round were new investors Clear Channel Communications and Zone Ventures,
and previous investors Grey Ventures and New Enterprise Associates. Los
Angeles-based HiWire's technology replaces ads run during terrestrial
radio broadcasts with Internet-only ads in the streaming simulcast of the
station. The company will use the funds for product development and sales
efforts.

(San Francisco) CNET on Friday reported on the upcoming launch of
Nintendo's GameCube console this Sunday, and where the company fits in the
battle for the console market that will begin this holiday season. The
article features comments from several analysts who discuss matters
including the unit's $100 price advantage on its competitors and the brand

(San Francisco) Wired News on Friday offered a feature article on former
Atom Films employee Todd Rosenberg's online short, "Laid Off: A Day In The
Life." The Flash-animated film has generated some income for the filmmaker
in the form of $1 tips he collects from the site where the film is hosted.
"I've been a cartoonist all my life but have never been able to make a
living out of it. Getting laid off allowed me the time to focus on what I
really love to do," Rosenberg said.

(San Francisco) Online magazine Salon.com featured an article Friday on
Microsoft's Xbox, and its differences or lack thereof when compared to the
other two leading manufacturers' consoles. Upset with the final console in
relation to what Microsoft said the Xbox would be, the article called the
console "a Me Too production financed by a company with the resources to
accomplish and afford so much more. With two possible exceptions, the Xbox
and its premiere list of games are undistinguished, undifferentiated and
inoffensive -- and consciously tooled to be exactly all those things. The
Xbox is, in effect, the Internet Explorer of game consoles."
