o Apple iPod Takes 60% of Japanese
Portable Player Market
Tokyo - Apple has announced that its iPod digital music
player now accounts for 60% of all players sold in Japan, citing a
report in Business Computer News, while its iTunes Music Store has
also become the leading digital music retailer since launching in
Japan in August. The company's market share for the iPod has
surpassed 50% of the Japanese market since September, BCN reported.
"It has been a tremendous year for Apple and music in Japan with the
opening of the iTunes Music Store and the introduction of the
impossibly small iPod nano and fifth generation iPod," said Philip
Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide product
marketing.

o Features
Dispute May Cause HP to Back Both Blu-ray, HD DVD Formats
Los Angeles - PC maker HP may end up supporting competing
next-generation DVD formats, in light of a recent decision by the
Blu-ray Disc Association to exclude certain interactive features
that will be standard with the rival HD DVD format, Reuters
reported. Toshiba's HD DVD format at launch will allow users to copy
DVDs so they can be played over a home media network, and offer
several other interactive features. HP made a request that Sony's
Blu-ray include the same features. "We are taking their request
seriously, but are not willing to delay the launch," Blu-ray
spokesman Andy Parsons told Reuters. HP hinted that the move may
cost Blu-ray its exclusive support. "If they are unable to
incorporate technologies we think are critical for the PC
architecture, we'll be more neutral. We'll think of cost and
implementation across the board. Potentially, we could support both
HD DVD and Blu-ray," Maureen Weber, general manager of personal
storage in HP's personal systems group, told Reuters.

o U.K.
Parliament to Analyze Digital Rights Management
London - The All Party Parliamentary Internet Group (APIG)
announced that it will hold a public inquiry into the controversial
issue of digital rights management (DRM). DRM software protects
copyright in things like software, music and films that are stored
digitally. "DRM systems bring threats and opportunities to both
publishers and consumers," said APIG Chairman Derek Wyatt. "This
inquiry will seek to establish how consumers, artists and the
distribution companies should be protected in a continually evolving
market place." APIG said it was particularly interested in the
effects of DRM on copyright law and consumers and whether changes to
laws would be necessary. Companies, organizations, academics and
individuals must submit their opinions in writing by Dec. 21; the
inquiry's results will be presented to Parliament.

o NBC Universal
Offers Movies, TV Shows on Peer Impact Legal P2P Service
Saratoga Springs, N.Y. - Wurld Media, developer of the
Peer Impact legal peer-to-peer file-sharing network, announced on
Thursday that it has signed an agreement with NBC Universal to make
the first content from a major studio available on a legal
peer-to-peer service. NBC Universal will provide Universal film
titles including "Ray," "The Motorcycle Diaries," "Meet the Fockers"
and "The Forty Year Old Virgin"; specials such as "Jerry Springer:
Uncensored" and "Blind Date"; family programs including "Balto" and

Censura" for download on Peer Impact. Titles will be available for a
24-hour period after purchase. Users of New York-based Wurld Media's
Peer Impact service also earn "Peer Cash" by allowing their
computers to be used as additional peer distribution points for
others downloading content, as well as when they recommend files to
friends who then purchase the content.

o U.K. Regulator
Launches "Digital Dividend Review" Process
London - Ofcom, the U.K. telecommunications watchdog,
announced that it has launched its "Digital Dividend" review of the
spectrum used by analog TV prior to the completion of the switchover
to digital in 2012. "The benefits of digital switchover, in terms of
efficient use of spectrum and subsequent innovation, are becoming
clearer," said
Ofcom CEO Stephen Carter. "This review is intended to maximize the
digital dividend." Digital broadcasting is about six times more
efficient than analogue, allowing more channels to be carried over
fewer airwaves. The regulator estimates that as much as 112 MHz of
UHF spectrum bandwidth could be freed up and used for other
services, such as wireless broadband and high-definition TV.
