o Refocused Sega Begins to Turn a Profit

Tokyo -- Sega, which recently ceased manufacturing video game consoles in
favor of focusing solely on game development, said that the change has had
a positive effect on its revenue, Reuters reported. For the six months
that ended on Sept. 30, the company reported an operating profit of $47.1
million, compared with a loss of $229.6 million for the same period last
year. "We believe we can finally break even on an operating basis in the
current business year," said Sega COO Tetsu Kayama. The company announced
on Wednesday that it is cutting the price for its remaining stock of
270,000 Dreamcast consoles -- which Sega ceased production of in January
-- to $49.95 each. Sega has shipped all remaining Dreamcasts to retailers,
and expects them all to be sold by mid-December.

o Nintendo to Ship 200,000 More GameCubes by Year's End

Redmond, Wash. -- Nintendo of America announced on Wednesday that it will
increase by 200,000 the number of GameCube video game consoles it ships to
U.S. retailers by the end of the year. The addition boosts total North
American shipments for 2001 to 1.3 million from the previously announced
1.1 million. Nintendo said the move comes in response to strong first-day
sales of the consoles, which became available to consumers last Sunday.
The company said that counting consoles, games and accessories, GameCube
generated almost $100 million on its launch date.

(San Francisco) Wired News ran a feature story this week on Photoshopping,
a pastime whereby amateurs or professional graphic designers use their
skills with the Adobe image-editing program Photoshop to manipulate
photographs, often with comical results. Some examples of the practice of
photoshopping include the "Tourist Guy" seen variously atop the World
Trade Center and other implausible locations, and photos of Osama bin
Laden with Sesame Street character Bert perched near his shoulder that
appeared in several newspapers. Many sites have sprung up that post new
user-submitted creations daily.
