o Apple Signs Long-Term Deals With iPod Flash Memory Card Makers

Cupertino, Calif. - Apple announced that it plans to invest $1.25 billion in the development of NAND flash memory for its iPod media players, having signed agreements with a group of flash memory producers -- Hynix, Intel, Micron, Samsung and Toshiba -- through the year 2010. Recent demand increases for NAND flash memory for portable consumer electronics devices like MP3 players have caused shortages among the world's manufacturers. Apple has now sold more than 30 million iPods, with its new Shuffle and Nano models relying on flash memory cards to store music. Some $500 million of Apple's investment will go to a new joint venture between Intel and Micron Technology; the two flash producers will themselves invest $5.2 billion in development of NAND flash memory for Apple. The Semiconductor Industry Association trade group expects the NAND flash memory market to grow 15.9% to $21 billion in 2006, reaching $35 billion by 2009.

o Google Donates $3 Million to Library of Congress for "World Digital Library"

Washington - The U.S. Library of Congress announced on Tuesday that it has received a $3 million gift from Google, earmarked for the development of a World Digital Library that will digitize and make available online works from the U.S. and around the world. The Library of Congress recently collaborated with Google on the digitization of about 5,000 books in the public domain. The public-private World Digital Library project aims to index and make available to libraries, content owners and their supporters "rare and unique cultural materials held in U.S. and Western repositories with those of other great cultures such as those that lie beyond Europe and involve more than 1 billion people: Chinese East Asia, Indian South Asia and the worlds of Islam stretching from Indonesia through Central and West Asia to Africa," said Librarian of Congress James H. Billington. "We're trying to recreate the memory of cultures that have much longer memories than we do," Billington told The New York Times.

o Report: U.S. Satellite Radio Sales to Reach 55 Million Units in 2010

New York - The market for U.S. consumer satellite radio devices is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 35%, from an installed base of 12 million units in 2005 to 55 million units in 2010, according to a report from market research firm JupiterResearch. The report predicts that 66% of satellite radios sold in 2005 will be transportable handheld or plug-and-play units, a segment that will maintain a 60% market share in 2010. In-car radio sales are expected to grow from 2.5 million units sold in 2005 to 6.9 million in 2010. "Transportable devices will lead the installed base mix with sales being driven by wide device selection and lower price points, however, in-vehicle interest has been strong," said JupiterResearch vice president and research director Michael Gartenberg. "Twenty-three percent of online consumers we surveyed demonstrated a strong interest in the service, but overall only 6% of online consumers have satellite radio." The firm also noted that XM and Sirius should look to expand their services into mobile markets, where the Internet streaming versions of their satellite radio stations can be distributed to cell phones.

o Report: VC Investing Maintains Strong Momentum in 2005

New York - Following an active year in 2004, venture capital investing sustained the momentum in 2005 in the U.S., Europe and Israel, according to year-end analysis by Ernst & Young and Dow Jones VentureOne. According to the report, fund raising by venture capital firms reached its highest level since 2001, while mergers and acquisitions and initial public offerings (IPOs) by venture-backed companies also showed continued strength. Though investments in venture-backed companies remained about the same as a year ago, the firms said that there was a stronger trend toward later-stage financings, suggesting that investors are "confident in the prospects of their portfolio companies and optimistic in regard to exit opportunities."

o Report: European Telecommunications Group Calls for IP Rights Reform

London - According to a report in the Financial Times, a group of large European telecommunications companies including U.K.-based Vodafone, Germany-based T-Mobile and Spain-based Telefonica is calling on the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) -- the organization responsible for IT standardization in Europe -- to tighten up the way it deals with intellectual property (IP) rights. The group claims that the status quo is leaving companies exposed to "unsustainable" and "excessive" demands for royalties. The Financial Times said the group was planning to tell ETSI on Tuesday that the benefits of standardization would be eroded if ETSI failed to change IP rules.
