o Apple Launches Canadian iTunes Store, Offers $0.83 Song Downloads

Cupertino, Calif. -- Apple on Thursday launched its iTunes Music Store in Canada, offering songs at a relatively cheap $0.99 CDN each (83 cents U.S.), compared to Apple's music store offerings in the U.S. and Europe. The Canadian store, offered in both English and French, launched one day after Apple's self-imposed deadline to launch by the end of November expired. Apple currently sells nearly 70% of all music downloads worldwide, from online stores in the U.S., Canada, U.K., France, Germany and nine other European nations.

o Cingular Beginning Deployment of 3G Wireless Broadband Services

Atlanta -- Cingular Wireless, which recently became the largest wireless carrier in the U.S. through its merger with AT&T Wireless, announced on Tuesday that it has selected Ericsson, Lucent Technologies and Siemens to begin deploying third generation, or "3G," wireless broadband networks in certain areas of the U.S. The new network equipment will offer average data speeds between 400-700 kilobits per second (Kbps), and bursts to several megabits per second on capable devices, Cingular said. Cingular's recent acquisition of AT&T Wireless provided the company with the spectrum necessary to build the 3G networks. The new network will allow for enhanced services, including high-speed Internet access and audio/video streaming for business customers, along with a host of consumer services such as high-resolution digital image and video capture and playback and advanced multi-player gaming.

o Weed File-Sharing Service Gets Investment From Marketing Firm Airvision

Seattle -- Shared Media Licensing, the Seattle-based developer of the Weed file-sharing service, announced on Thursday that it has received an undisclosed investment from the AV Capital division of Airvision, a Seattle-based marketing firm. The Weed peer-to-peer distribution system allows users to listen to a track several times before paying for it. If the user forwards the song to a friend, and the friend purchases the track, the sender receives a share of the profit, along with the artist, record label and Shared Media Licensing. The company said that more than 7,000 artists have now distributed tracks through Weed, including Built to Spill, Chuck D and Heart. Weed is also offered through eBay's trial digital music service. "The involvement of AV Capital allows us to move ahead rapidly in software development, marketing, and content acquisition," said Shared Media Licensing president John Beezer. "Airvision's expertise in consumer psychology and brand development is key to our growth going forward."

o Report: Europeans Watch Less TV, Spend More Time Online

Paris -- According to a new report by market analysis firm JupiterResearch, about 27% of Internet users in Europe said they spend less time watching TV because of the increasing amount of time they spend online. The report, entitled "Evolution of Media Use in Europe: Web Impacting Consumption", said about 17% of European respondents in a similar survey conducted in 2001 admitted to watching less TV in order to surf the Internet. JupiterResearch said the Internet was having an especially harmful effect on TV viewing in France, Spain and the U.K. "In these markets, higher broadband penetration is a key driver of cannibalisation as broadband users tend to spend more time online compared with dial-up users," the report said.

o Briefly Noted:

(Washington) President Bush has signed into law H.R. 1417, the Copyright Royalty and Distribution and Reform Act, which abolishes the much-maligned Copyright Arbitration Royalty Panel (CARP) process for determining the rates that webcasters must pay to record labels and artists to stream music online. The new law will charge the U.S. Copyright Office with appointing a panel of three full-time Copyright Royalty Judges, replacing the previous temporary panels that arrived on hotly-contested rates during the last CARP process. The law also will enable parties on both sides of disputes to request relevant information from one another, empowering the judges to compel and subpoena unwilling participants.

(Sydney) ZDNet Australia on Thursday continued its coverage of the recording industry's Australian copyright infringement case against Sharman Networks, operator of the Kazaa file-sharing service. Despite objections from Sharman, an executive from New York-based MediaSentry testified on Thursday that its technology can identify Australian Kazaa users by their IP address, and also detect the copyright-infringing files contained in the 'shared' folder on their hard drives. The statements counter Sharman's claims that it has no control over what users do with the Kazaa software, and cannot filter copyrighted songs without affecting other, legal files.
