o Judge Delays Early Ruling In File-Sharing Copyright Infringement Case

Los Angeles -- A federal judge has delayed ruling on whether to pre-empt a
copyright infringement suit brought by entertainment companies against
peer-to-peer file-sharing services Grokster and Streamcast Networks'
Morpheus. On Monday, U.S. District Court Judge Stephen Wilson heard
arguments for summary judgment from attorneys representing the
file-sharing networks as well as the movie studios and record labels that
brought the lawsuits. Wilson said he may issue a "speaking order," or a
kind of rough draft that is handed down before an actual ruling. "Some of
the things said here were provocative. I'll have to go back and rethink
some of my impressions," CNET News.com reported Wilson saying during the
hearing. "The fact that the judge is weighing the matter is very
encouraging for us," Streamcast CEO Steve Griffin told the Los Angeles
Times. Judge Wilson did not provide a timetable in which he may deliver
his speaking order or an actual ruling.

o HP, Five Other Camera Makers Propose Digital Photo Standards

Palo Alto, Calif. -- PC manufacturer Hewlett-Packard has joined with five
other top companies in digital imaging to propose an industry standard
that would allow consumers to print photos by directly connecting their
digital cameras to their printers -- without the need for a PC. Until now,
each of the companies, including HP, Canon, Fuji Photo Film, Olympus
Optical, Seiko Epson and Sony, have had their own method of direct
printing though the use of proprietary digital cameras and printers,
making the combination of different brands virtually impossible. The new
unified specification, tentatively named "DPS," would ensure compatibility
across digital cameras and printers, regardless of brand. The companies
are hoping the standard will help spur the growth of digital photography.

(San Jose, Calif.) The San Jose Mercury News recently reported on the
lackluster performance of legitimate online music services offered by
major record labels and several companies to which they have licensed
their songs. In the 12 months since the launch of MusicNet, Pressplay,
Listen.com's Rhapsody and other services, analysts and sources say that
they have yet to reach 100,000 subscribers between them. While
improvements to these services have been made, to increase the amount of
music available and the flexibility of what may be done with downloaded
tracks, licensing issues continue to limit the available catalogs of all
of these services, limiting their appeal for consumers.
