o Trial Begins for Norwegian Teen Accused of Making DVD-Cracking Software

Oslo, Norway -- The trial of Jon Johansen, a Norwegian who at 15 wrote the
controversial DeCSS computer program -- which can circumvent the security
technology on DVDs -- began on Monday in a court in Oslo. Charges were
filed against Johansen after Norwegian prosecutors received a complaint
from the Motion Picture Association of America, which has actively
prosecuted others for distributing the DeCSS code. Johansen, now 19,
pleaded not guilty to charges of creating illegal software, which can
bring a sentence of up to two years in prison and large fines if he is
convicted. Johansen has said his initial interest in DeCSS was to enable
DVDs to be played on machines running the Linux operating system, which
the format does not support. The trial is expected to last five days.

o Report: U.S. Parents Find Video Game Ratings System to be Accurate

New York -- An independent survey of U.S. parents found that they
generally approve of the ratings assigned to video games by the
Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB), a ratings organization set up
by the video game industry. The ESRB's system places warnings for parents
on video game packaging, such as "EC" (Early Childhood), "E" (Everyone),
"T" (Teen), "M" (Mature) and "AO" (Adults Only). The survey, commissioned
by the ESRB and conducted independently by Peter Hart Research Associates,
showed parents actual footage from 80 popular games and found that 77
percent would have assigned the same or a less-restrictive rating to the
games. "Parents strongly agree with ESRB ratings," wrote Peter D. Hart
Research Associates in a memo summarizing the results. "Our research
confirms that the tastes and values of ESRB raters consistently and
reliably match those of American parents." Many retailers will not sell
games with an "M" or "AO" rating to minors, and some, including Wal-Mart,
refuse to stock overly violent games or games with sexual content.
